Towing a 2001 F-150 with manual 5 speed

I have an older Ford F150 truck 2001. I want to take it to another location and I want to just tow it if possible. Its a manual transmission with a 5 speed. Can I do this safely with all for on the road or even with my tow dolly? I tried to get Ford to give me the OK but they seem to just want to sell me another truck. Can anyone offer any insight? Thanks!!!!

A manual transmission 5 speed can be towed 4 down in neutral and the ignition key turned to the first position to unlock steering. However, you'll need a base plate installed, which would cost about $400 plus installation. You could put it on a tow dolly and not have any issues.

the place to find out is the owners manual. Try justgivemethedamnmanual. Download your vehicle and look in the section titled..recreational towing. Not trailer towing.

I looked in a couple of printings of the 2001 Owners manual, it mentions limited towing of an automatic transmission, but NOTHING about towing a manual shift.

I searched and found the 'O.K.' to tow at various other sites and owner's groups that says it's fine for towing.
