Towing a 2017 Jeep Wrangler JK

We were looking at towing a Cherokee behind our coach. Its a pain and requires a power steering add on to power the electronic power steering since ignition if off while being towed. We now have a new JK and want to hear from anyone who tows one now. Is it really as simple as transfer case in N and tranny in P ....is the key on acc ? Just looking for input from here. We see lots of Wranglers being towed so I hope some of you are on this forum.....

Towing a 2017 JK

Towing a 2016 JK here. BlueOx baseplate. Ready Brute Elite towbar and setup. Ready Brute breakaway also. The setup requires no cutting into the MH brake airlines. And after hooking up, it really is that easy. Get the transfer case into N, put the main gear shifter in P. Turn the engine off. Remove the keys and lock the doors. The steering wheel does not lock so it tracks behind the MH just fine. Miles do not rack up while towing. Happy camper here. Click image for larger version

With some other type of braking system inside, maybe you have to do something to keep them powered. I donít know that and hopefully someone else can weigh in. With my system, it has a steel cable that goes through the firewall and connects to the brake pedal. If you look real close about middle of the tow bar, thereís a little finger standing up. That pulls the wire which pulls the pedal down when the coach stops, thus stopping the Jeep. No electric required.

Tom 62,
The smartest thing you can do for yourself is, go to the OWNERS MANUAL. Every once in a while Jeep changes things around in those manuals and, in fact, the jeep drive train too. So, what's done for prep for towing in a '16 and below, "possibly" may be different than your '17. I'm assuming since it is a '17, you got the owners manual with it, correct? It will be under the section of "Towing with a Motor home. Many of us towing JKs pretty much have the same sequence of events for prep for towing but, you want to be sure on your '17 model.

Just as an example, you state to "leave your key in the ACC position" . Well, on our '15 JKUR, we take the key completely out. So, again, see what your owners manual states.

I did read the manual. It was just a little confusing to me to take key out. I asked the guys at Jeep and they also said take it out. My friend has a Wrangler a few years older and he has to leave key in and disconnect battery. I just wanted to hear from somebody that w/o key it tracked ok. Most other type vehicles I have towed you left key in and on ACC to unlock steering wheel ....thanks everyone for your input.

I remove the key when towing my 2017 Wrangler. Works fine because there is no locking steering column.

Thanks all for your comments. I will follow the book when we tow our 17 Wrangler JK Unlimited. It just seemed strange to me that no key in ignition. I tried to turn the weel and it seemed very hard and that concerned me on how well it would track. But after all your comments my mind was put at ease. Thanks and see you on the road...

Tom 62,
Of course it's going to seem to be hard to turn. The engine isn't on and neither is the power steering. You're '17 may use electronic power steering, not engine driven power steering, not sure. In either case, do follow the owners manual. I just read over the towing procedures in your '17 owners manual and, it's almost exactly, word for word, the same as most JK owners manuals. I say "most" because, Jeep screwed up a year or two ago and, for some odd reason, when prepping the Jeep to drive again, after towing, it said to "reconnect the negative battery cable".

The problem was, they NEVER said to DISCONNECT it in the first place, while prepping it for towing. Nice move Jeep! Anyway, no, there is no steering lock to unlock with the key in and turned. You'll be just fine with that key completely out of the Jeep when towing.

2017 JKs do not use electric steering. They use the old tried & true hydraulic pump running off the engine.

Roger that Sir, I wasn't sure. I'd heard about the change but, didn't know if it had taken place yet. Thanks for the info.

I just finished setting up our new 2017 Wrangler JKU I went on a short test run the other day and we will be taking it on the first long trip Wednesday. The setup we went with was a Blue Ox base Plate, Ready Brake Elite tow bar, Ready Brake break away kit, and Hopkins light kit. I installed it all myself including running an LED to the dash to monitor the Jeep's brakes. It was a good bit of work but not terribly difficult.
