Towing a 4Runner
I,m about to buy a 1997 Toyota 4Runner manual transmission 4X4. I,m pretty sure these are tow able 4 down because of the manual transmission but i can not find out any info on Remco web site. does anybody have any experience towing one and what position do you put the transfer case in.

Don't know your answer but if there isn't an owners manual with it, which might shed some light on towing, go to the Toyota.com site, look up owners manual for the 1997 4 runner and go the section on emergencies which will talk about towing in an emergency. I have found that section to be helpful on other vehicles indicating tow conditions and limits. I looked up yours but it isn't as clear as in some of the others I have searched.

As long as it has a manual shift transfer case put it in neutral and the transmission in 4th and you are good to go. Also check for manual or automatic front hubs. If manual make sure they are set to the "unlock" position.

I'm getting two different stories, is there anyone out there that has flat towed a 1997 forerunner with a 5speed and 4x4 with a manual transfer case. Some are telling me transfer case into neutral, and others say 2H. Both of course transmission in neutral. Can any one advise. Thx Steve

Does your 4Runner have a manually shifted transfer case or does it operate by a electric switch on the dash??

That is correct advice. Again, manual transfer case only.
