Question Towing a '96 Subaru Legacy SW--5 speed

Does anyone know for sure - whether or not I can tow my 1996 Subaru Leagacy Outbk SW-- 5 spd manual?????
I hear conflicting reports from 3 different tow and hitch companies saying "YES you can" but a dealer saying "NO". In this case I am doubting the dealer--but maybe it's because it's what I want to hear! Help out there!?

Subaru Towing

I have been towing my 2004 Subaru WRX STi since new. I use it for both auto events and short vacations. The wife's VW goes to Arizona each winter on the tote, more fun to have a convertable down in the southwest.

See the PDF from Subaru, it pertains to all manual transmission Subarus with some special instructions just for the STi model which I have.
