Towing a Ford Edge

After purchasing a Grand Cherokee and finding out after the pruchase it has the wobble I'm looking into purchaseing a 2018 Ford Edge to tow. Is there any gotcha with the Edge?

Just make sure you have the right model. Our 2015 titanium was the only version that was for that year. Check the manual! The only other thing we added an LSL Toad-Charge . On our model, hook up, put it in neutral, foot off brake and press the ignition button. Never had a problem.

Six cylinders tow flat, four cylinders don't. Different transmissions.

I regretted every Wrangler I rode in. They're not serious cars.

We tow a 2017 Ford Edge SEL 3.5L fwd. We’ve towed it 6000+ miles and driven it only a total of another 6000 miles. Today we traveled across Michigan, 235 miles, from Muskegon to Port Huron, I-96 & I-69. The absolute worst of interstates, again with no issues. Our dealer set ours up with all Blue Ox equipment and a SMI Stay-n-Play brake system with a battery disconnect. Also it’s a comfortable crossover vehicle. Total weight for ours with the baseplate, full fuel, and no additional camping gear is 4200lbs.

We did. have a 2017 Wrangler Shara and sold it.

Thanks, everyone looks like it should be less eventful than with the Grand Cherokee wobble.

I've towed a 2018 Ford Edge SEL with a 3.5L V6 FWD drivetrain about 24,000 without any difficulty.

Here's an excerpt from the owner's manual regarding recreational towing:

Follow these guidelines if you have a need for recreational (RV) towing. An example of recreational towing would be towing your vehicle behind a motorhome. We designed these guidelines to prevent damage to your transmission.

You can tow your 2.7L EcoBoost or 3.5L (6F50 or 6F55) equipped vehicle with all four wheels on the ground.

If you tow your vehicle with all four wheels on the ground:
*Tow only in the forward direction.
*Release the parking brake.

Vehicles with Keyless Start (If Equipped)
1. Start the vehicle by pressing the brake pedal, and then pressing the keyless start button until the vehicle starts.
2. Press the brake pedal and shift the gearshift into neutral (N).
3. Turn the vehicle off by pressing the keyless start button once.
4. Disconnect the negative (black) cable from the battery. You need the door key to lock and unlock doors when the battery cable is disconnected. See Changing the 12V Battery.

Note: The anti-theft system does not work until you reconnect the battery cable.

Start the engine within 15 minutes of reconnecting the battery cable.

Pretty straightforward. However, the dealer who installed the my Blue Ox baseplate and Air Force One supplemental brake system did complain that the instructions for the kit provided by Blue Ox for wiring the turn signals and brake lights was NOT well written. He had promised that he'd be done with the installation by close of business after starting the installation when the shop opened in the morning. About three in the afternoon, he called to apologize that the installation wouldn't be completed until the next day due to difficulty. I didn't pay enough attention to give specifics regarding his difficulty. He was experienced and, as far as I could tell, did an excellent job of installing. I believe it had to do with the LED taillights/turn signals.

You'll note that step 4 (above) of the procedure calls for the negative battery cable to be disconnected. With the keyless start system, when turning the engine off with the transmission in neutral, some of the instrument cluster remains powered up, potentially draining the battery.

My installer added a 12v charge line from the motorhome to the car battery, eliminating the need for disconnecting the battery cable.

We've been happy with the Edge as a toad.

Take care,
Stu

My '17 Titanium with 3.5L AWD tows well and as mentioned makes a good toad. I have no left over lights on my keyless with the neg battery open as Ford says. Tail light hookup is different between the SEL and Titanium models. If you get a PAN roof there is no metal for mag lights.

Our 2013 SEL FW and 2018 Edge SEL AWD flat tow great.
2018 Taillight connection was a problem though. I found the easiest way to get working taillights is with a wireless magnetic mount light bar. This bar sticks to the roof of the edge, not the plastic air deflector over the rear window.
I didn’t realize I could keep the 2018 battery connected by using a power line from motor home until earlier in this thread.

This is what my manual says and the 3.5L it is refers to is the 3.5 6 cylinder without turbo. The 3.5L EcoBoost is not 4 down towable in the 2017 Edge. I check with Ford Customer Support Line. The 3.5L Ecoboost has a different transmission.

I think you have a typo. Only the 4 cylinder 2.0L EcoBoost is not towable. Both V6s are towable.
From the manual:

"2.0L EcoBoost vehicles with automatic
transmission (6F35) CANNOT be
flat-towed (all wheels on the ground) as
vehicle or transmission damage may occur."

"You can tow your 2.7L EcoBoost or 3.5L
(6F50 or 6F55) equipped vehicle with all
four wheels on the ground.
If you tow your vehicle with all four wheels
on the ground:
• Tow only in the forward direction.
• Release the parking brake "

I had just looked in the Motorhome Dinghy book last night for the Edge and it's not listed as towable in any configuration.

It was on our short list for a toad.

So where does it say they are towable?

Edit: I see where 777 Driver said its in the manual, but I wonder why it's not listed in the dinghy guide.
