For those interested in towing Ford Rangers, I'd refer them to Post #1 in THIS THREAD at the Ranger Station forum.

Ford does say the Ranger is towable 4 down with the standard transmission in neutral and the electronic (dash mounted) 4wd switch in 2wd. Their only stipulation is 55 mph maximum speed. I did read this posting awhile back and this guy doesn't think they are towable at all unless a stick shiftable transfer case is used.

I would venture that Ford knows more about it than him.....I was only wondering why if anyone knows that a short distance above 55 mph would hurt the drive train.

I towed a 2004 Ford Ranger 4x4 for about 2 years at speeds around 63+. I had a problem with the tires; they were ready for replacement in less than 2 years. Traded the 4x4 for a 2007 Ranger 2WD and never had a problem. Traded the 07 Ranger for the 09 Lincoln I'm driving now because my wife liked the ride of the Lincoln much better than the Ranger; actually I do also. Don't know if Ford had a concern about tires when they set the limit but thought I'd pass it on.

Towing max speed in Florida is 70 MPH which I think is more then fair a tow speed for the tower and the rest of us. I think 55 is a little low and 70 a little to high.
