towing a Honda?????

After reading the dingy towing guide it states that several Hondas CAN be towed even though they are not listed on their guide???? BUT they state that you need to go to the ownes guide to see if in fact the car can be towed. Without trying to find all the owners guides?? does anyone know what models say from 2002 to 2006 that can be towed 4 down?? Very much appreciate any assistance. Seem to be spending more time than we want to trying to find a toad?? Thanks in advance for any suggestions (we are newbees-can you tell)?

Motorhome Magazine has a dinghy towing guide listing what vehicles are towable without modification.

we towed a Honda Accord toad 4 down and did just fine. We have graduated to a CRV and all is still well

Follow the towing guide in the owners manual.

FYI, most owners manals can be found on line.

We were told that we should not tow our 2006 Pilot. The 2005 Pilot is towable.

Both the Motorhome magazine and FMCA's towing guides are not all inclusive.

FLYING BUTCH, well we are towing a 2006 Honda Civic with a manual transmission. When we bought the Honda we were told by the Honda staff at the dealership that it could be flat towed...if you followed their procedures. We have towed this car to the east coast twice (we live in California), to Washington State and back and well lots of other places. I have 22000 miles driving the Honda and most likely that much towing the Honda without a problem. Last year I replaced the original tires cause they had worn out, mostly from us towing it all the time. It is easy to set up, Hook up the tow bar, car in neutral, parking brake off, key in position #1 (so the front tires will turn, unlocks the steering wheel lock), set the brake buddy in place and then go. We did discover the hard way we needed to add a battery back up charger for the Honda. I run a wire from the coach battery to the Honda's battery. This keeps the Honda's battery from being discharged (dead) after long tows. Its called the "Toad-Charge". Works great! Here is a link to the charger: TOAD-CHARGE™ - Toad-Charge
I have attached a picture with the Honda hooked up to the coach, well sort of, its kind of hiding behind the back of the coach.

Flying Butch, I know you're towing an Accord but for others we tow an 05 Pilot and have towed it since June of 05 with no problems. We're full time so it has spent alot of time looking at the rear of the motorhome.

DH gets new car fever about once a month and goes to look at the newest Pilots but is always told they can't be towed four down. That's the deal breaker.

We use a Blue Ox tow bar and a Brake Buddy. The set up to tow the Pilot per their instructions is never go from reverse to neutral without running thru the forward gears then settling in neutral. Even when we stop for the night and haven't unhooked we do run thru the forward gears to hopefully help keep everything lubricated. This is with the car running . Does it matter? No clue but our Pilot runs like a champ and has had no problems at all. Yes we do take it only to a Honda dealer for it's routine checkups.

One thing we learned when we first started towing a car back in 1972 is never hurry when hooking up the car or unhooking it. Take your time and do all the steps needed to keep the car healthy and everyone and everything safe. Then double check everything again.

For some reason as we have aged it has become even more important to re-check things.

Happy and safe travels.

Flying Butch: One more piece of info. We've fulltimed since fall of 05 when we selected our tow...a new, 05 Honda Element automatic. It's UUUGGGGGLY (friends say it looks like a toaster!!)...but, it has been a GREAT tow vehicle from Alaska, to the SW deserts, to NE Maritime Provinces, through the mtns....everywhere. It IS recognized by Honda as "towable" and it's Owner's Manual SPECIFICALLY provides instructions for setting it up prior to towing for the day. Now here's the important thing to appreciate. After 05, Honda no longer provides overt approval nor (I believe) specific instructions in the Owner's Manuals to set up for towing. Doesn't mean you can't do so, BUT, and this can be a BIG BUT!!...IF something goes wrong due to towing Honda Warranty won't cover it as they did on 05 models. And, THIS is a consideration when selecting "4 down" toads (tow vehicles). Many CAN be towed, but only a select few would be covered by the manufacturer. P.S.: wish Honda would approve towing on their newer model Elements...we'd likely get one....although our 05 is runnin GREAT and has held up VERY VERY WELL....still kinda looks new....when washed up a little Steve & Lynette

A very accurate and true statement indeed, Savannah!

How about a 1994 Honda Accord FWD? Can it be flat towed. Owners manual says NO.

When we had a motorhome, we towed a 2003 Honda Element. At that time, it appeared in the Dinghy Towing Guide. Around 2005, it disappeared from the Guide, but the CRV was still listed...and the Element is built on the CRV chassis so I never could understand why Honda suddently stopped approving it for 4-down towing.

If you have any questions about what can or cannot be towed, with or without modification, contact Remco Towing, Home | Remco Towing.
