We just bought a new Jeep Wrangler and we're having problems putting the transfer case into 2H after towing. This is our 3rd jeep and never had a problem before. The other 2 were manuals and the new one is an automatic.

We are following the manual step by step but it's very difficult to shift the transfer case from neutral to 2H. The first time I pushed the Jeep back a few feet and the DW was able to make the shift. Yesterday I pushed it back then forward a few feet before she was able to get it in gear. Today she was able to get it into 4L and drive it a few feet and then got it into 2H.

Is there a trick we're missing to get the clutch teeth to align. Are others having this problem or is the new Jeep having issues?

Any help would be appreciated.

Do not force the xfer case selector. With automatic sometimes I have to go from neutral to drive and back to neutral, then it easily changes.

Could be the linkage needs some adjustment. Easy to do on a TJ - but don't know about JK. On a TJ the mechanical linkage is somewhat problematic, especially with a body lift as mine. Novak makes a cable replacement for the stock rod linkage - which works much better.

Agree with going from neutral tomdrive to get it to shift. There is a plastic bushing that attaches the shift cable to the shifter and transfer case. You WILL break the linkage when it is least convenient for you. Advanced Adapters makes a very stout cable that will not break and shifts much better. Mine cost about $500 for the cable and installation, but I am confident I will be able to drive my Jeep when I get where I'm going.

Same advice here--I sometimes have to go back and forth between P, N, R, D before it'll slip into 2WD.

one time I forced it and it snapped a cable underneath that had to be replaced. But I was car-less for that trip. Lucky for me, it was a pull through site so I could leave the jeep sit there until it was time to go home.

Sounds like someone should of found an old Liberty 2005-2007. May not be a real jeep, but they tow great. Dave

the reason why the transfer case is not going in gear is because the teeths on the cogs are not in sync... thats why you should not force it in gear. The only way to sync the teeth is to move the car... sometimes you get luck, sometimes you don't.
