Been looking for a new Toad, but after looking at reviews on what's out there I'm thinking of going older since so many of todays vehicles have their little quirks. I want something I can work on if need be. So if I was to tow an older rear wheel drive with an automatic trans is there something I can attach to disengage the drive shaft or do I have to pull it to tow?
Currently towing an 03 Pontiac Grand Am but it has the infamous GM 3.4 V6 that likes to blow head gaskets, reports that I have read show that this is still a problem in the current GM vehicles. You'd think that they would have solved this problem after all these years.

Remco makes a Remco's DriveShaft Coupling for automatic rear wheel drive vehicles.

How old is pre-70? Back in the 50's, 60's a lot of automatic transmissions would have been OK to tow since they pumped oil from just the driveshaft turning.

You need to disconnect the shaft in a '67 unless, maybe, it had a T5/T45 manual transmission... Flat towing a Vintage Mustang??? - Vintage Mustang Forums

I started out building a 1964 GMC pickup for our toad. The rearend is from a 1984 Suburban as is the 700r4 automatic transmission. I had a Remco disconnect installed to make it towable. Lot's of dealers said it couldn't be done. The trick is to find a dealer that can actually build stuff as opposed to just install stuff. I lucked out and found such a dealer just South of Fort Worth, TX. MAC'S PERFORMANCE for Cummins, Duramax, Powerstroke, R.V.'s and Hotrods - Main Page you need to use IE for their site. Ask to speak with Mac. They did me a first class job! I would be confident in saying they could make virtually anything towable if you have the time to wait on it.
Unfortunately the GMC is setting in a storage shed waiting for me to finish it. I will get it done someday, we just ended up getting on the road sooner than we expected to.
