Towing an automated manual transmission
I'm looking at buying a Hyundai Velocitor with an automated manual transmission to use as a toad. The toad guide says its 4 wheel towable with a manual transmission, but no comment is made about the automated manual. I've gotten two different answers from Hyundai salespeople, and I don't trust them as a source for technical information anyway. What's a good way to find out for sure?

Call the dealer and ask for the service manager. Better yet go to the dealer and talk to him in person.

If towable get it in writing

First look in the owners manual. Second, call Hyundai directly. Third, if it is towable, get it in writing.

Disregard what any salesman says. Written directions/instructions always override verbal comments.

I would never trust a service manager to answer that correctly. Some are great at knowing technical information but most are non technical managers. They know how to run the service department only.
The best thing to do is talk to a transmission technician at the dealer. I would also have him send in a technical request to their technical hotline where they go for answers when they need help. There should be an outline procedure for towing four down. Im sure it is similar to the Ford Focus and Fiesta automatically shifted manual transmission.

The 2013 Dinghy towing guide says "only manual transmission models are towable". That says it all for me. They have a lot of resources at their disposal, and I would trust what they say. Sounds like its time to buy a dolly.

It is a manual transmission, only the clutch is automated. The dingy guide never mentions that configuration.

You neglected to mention year, turbo and non turbo. The Dinghy guide mentions the new turbo. Their choices are manual or automatic. It reads to me in the specs that the transmission you mentioned maybe only available in non turbo model.
In 2012 the dinghy guide showed only non turbo model, it said NO to the automatic. In 2013 the guide shows both models, turbo and non. It also says NO to both. There are tow different trans that operate as "automatic". Both of these transmissions are not available in both models.
I'm sure you really would like the car and that you are trying to find a way to justify buying and automatic. I've seen them on the street, and they are a very good looking car.
Looking at the towing guide for 2013, Hyundai's looks to be the simplest one to tow.
Simply "YES for manual, "NO" for automatic. No convoluted instructions about fuses,battery cables, towing time limits or transmission exercise.
This is why I choose my 2012 focus manual trans. No steering column lock, no key needed, no battery worries. I can tow as far as I want, without the need to do something to the car everyday.

If the clutch is automatic, then IMO the trans should be treated as an automatic. The manual transmission they are referring to in the towing guide is a transmission with a 4, 5, or 6 speed gear shift and a manual clutch; e.g. one with a clutch pedal.

I don't know how Hyundai builds their transmission, but the smart car also has an automated manual transmission - it is a 5-speed sequential shift gearbox with a clutch. The clutch is activated via a set of motors controlled by a computer. Other than the electrical requirements of the system it's no different than a clutch activated by a set of muscles controlled by a brain.
