Towing an Edge

Does anyone know if you can tow an automatic Ford Edge?

Look in the owners manual under towing. Another resource is to Google "Dinghy Guide." Regardless of who tells you what, the only official guide is the Owner's Manual.

The answer was yes in 13 & 14, not sure for 15. But engine an other options can change that answer. Owners manual is the place to check.

The '13 3.5 engine one is towable 4 down -- that is one of my towed cars. The 2015 in not. Do a google search using the following "Ford Edge Owners Manual" and use the year of the model you want to research. When you have the manual, look in the index for recreational towing and go to that page -- it will tell you what models you can tow 4 down. Hope this helps. I have towed our 2013 about 7,000 miles with no problems at all.

Here is a copy of what my 2013 owner's manual says for the engine type I have (3.5):
"Vehicles Equipped with a 3.5L or 3.7L Engine
Note: Put your climate control system in recirculated air mode to
prevent exhaust fumes from entering your vehicle. See the Climate
Control chapter.
Follow these guidelines if you have a need for recreational towing, such
as towing your vehicle behind a motorhome or truck. We designed these
guidelines to prevent damage to your vehicle after it is hooked-up to the
recreational vehicle or tow dolly.
You can tow your front-wheel drive vehicle with all four wheels on the
ground or with the front wheels off the ground by using a tow dolly. If
you are using a tow dolly, follow the instructions specified by the
equipment provider. If you are towing with all four wheels on the ground,
see the following instructions.
You can tow your all-wheel drive vehicle with all four wheels on the
ground or with all four wheels off the ground using a vehicle transport
trailer. Do not tow your all-wheel drive vehicle with the front wheels off
the ground (by using a tow dolly) and the rear wheels on the ground.
This causes damage to your all-wheel drive system. If you are using a
vehicle transport trailer, follow the instruction specified by the
equipment provider. If you are towing with all four wheels on the ground,
see the following instructions.
If you tow your vehicle with all four wheels on the ground:
• Tow only in the forward direction.
• Release the parking brake.
• Place the transmission in position N.
• Place the ignition in the accessory position. See the Starting and
Stopping the Engine chapter.
• Do not exceed 65 mph (105 km/h).
• Start the engine and allow it to run for five minutes at the beginning
of each day and every six hours thereafter. With the engine running
and your foot on the brake, shift into position D and then into
position R before shifting back into position N."

2015 Edge is towable. Sure hope so, mine is on its way. See page 11.

Winepress, I do stand corrected as per your attachment. My information was from FMCA and in their annual towing guide, they did not list the 2015 as towable 4 down --- I am very happy to see that it is still towable 4 down. They are a great vehicle to tow and I was greatly disappointed to see it disappear. Now my faith in Ford is restored. I would still look at the owner's manual to make sure that nothing has changed -- I am sure it has not.

I just looked at the 2015 manual and it shows the 2.7 (Ecoboost only) and the 3.5 automatic as being towable. As a note, the only difference I noted is that you disconnect the negative battery cable when getting it ready to tow -- that differs from earlier models where you do not disconnect the battery negative cable. That may alleviate a problem I had where the battery would not start the car until it was jumped on a couple of occasions -- I worked around this problem by running a fused, positive wire from my coach house batteries to the positive side of the car battery -- the car battery now stays charged up and I do not have to go through the disconnecting and reconnecting of the battery cable. I also turn off the climate control (after putting the climate mode into recirculating mode so I do not get fumes in the car while towing) and radio.

Most earlier Edges were towable as well, starting with the 2007 model. To be sure, though, each specific year and engine configuration should be checked in the owner manual.

David, that's how my 2014 Edge was set up. I enjoyed towing it with no dead battery. Unfortunately my Edge disappeared from the dealer during a service, never to be seen again. Hope I enjoy the 15 as much.

I towed a 2011 and I think it was one of the best toads I have ever had and I have had a lot of different toads. You will need a charge wire from the coach chassis battery to the toad, how to install one has been covered but if needed I will post again.

I just bought a 2014 Edge and I will need to install a charge line, so I would be interested in how you installed your's. Can you point me in the direction of your original post?

The sport model was not towable in 2012. We have FWD with the big engine. It tows great.

I agree that a charge line is really needed. We have the keyless entry and ignition so a lot of things seem to stay alive.

As for removing the negative cable I would not want to do that because there might be a situation where getting the car disconnected and away from the RV is urgent. Or just embarrasing.

Craig start at the coach chassis battery install a 20 amp auto reset 12 volt breaker or 20 amp fuse run a #10 wire to the rear plug ( I ran my wire to a 6 wire plug in to the middle connecter ) run a #10 wire from the toad plug to A 20 amp fuse or breaker then the toad battery, make sure you have a good ground from the coach to the toad. I installed a heavy duty diode on my toad wire just before the fuse on the toad battery. This is normally not done but I wanted to make sure no voltage was on the wire that could back feeds.

Thanks for the info. I'm a little confused though, did you wire the charge line into the toad umbilical cord? If so, did you use a different cord and plug on the toad side? I ask this because my current umbilical cord and plug only supports a four wire setup.
