we traded the bmw for the rio which weighs in at 2500 lbs.

Glen hit it on the head, cars are aligned with a little tow in and if it was pulled backwards it would be tow out, increase in tire wear.

Oops. I thought a 42 Phaeton would have a 10K lb hitch. I'm surprised

I think I mentioned it was a gasser not a DP. most gassers to my knowledge have a 5000 max tow rating. But I could be wrong.

It would make no difference which way the tire rotated the wear would be
the same given proper alignment.
How ever tracking would be less when pulling it backward.

If you saw what was keeping the wheel from moving you would not
tow it very far but they do make and sell a devise that locks the steering
wheel solid and used in commercial towing.

Alignment is set for forward motion with toe-in. If you go backwards.....
Just set your car for toe-out and you will see an interesting wear pattern in a while.
