Towing Equinox

DW and I decided to have the option to take her 2011 Equinox, rather than our trailer and 2 Harleys, depending on trip and destination.

I already know the Equinox is a good 4 down toad, but that's about it regarding towing a car, experience wise. Looking for recommendations on a decent system and price I can install myself. (I'm very handy)

One caveat I'm facing is her car is leased and the lease ends in 16 months. So I assume doing this now could be a waste of money? I have considered buying it as will only have about 20k on it at the end of the 50k lease. Ideas?

Pick up a nice used car dolly for a fraction of the price and use it until you are sure. We have a 2010 Equinox that we have towed 4 down since buying it new. We love it since we are retired and don't need a huge vehicle anymore!

Thanks Stano, sounds like some good advice, as long as the hardware is specific to each vehicle, which I assume. I'm not opposed to a dolly at all, although I know 4 down is more convienient. Any idea what one may pay for a used dolly and what else is needed to go that route?

One caveat... If AWD, it may not be towable on a dolly.
Check the owners manual to be sure.

I tried a tow dolly first, before going to all four down. You will hear arguments for both. Regardless, I'll not ever go back to a tow dolly if I can help it.

Yes, it may cost less, but be prepared for several issues that go along with it. It was a real pain to load any unload the toad (especially in bad weather). Be prepared to check, recheck after a few miles, and recheck each and every stop. I can not tell you how many times the straps worked loose over a few miles. Repack the bearings every 1K miles. Another set of tires to worry about blowing out....

I never have problems or worries after upgrading to a tow bar and base plate for all four down. It was well worth the cost.

I know, now all the tow dolly enthusiasts will chime in and say why I am wrong, but if you don't take my advice, you can learn the hard way and pay to upgrade with confidence later....
