Towing Ford Explorer:

We have been traveling for years with a Demco KKIII Tow Dolly, towing our 2012 VW Passat Diesel. I now have a Ford Explorer and would like to tow it instead. I am thinking of a Blue Ox Tow Bar, Base Plate, and braking unit. Probably a Blue Ox BRK2012. Would welcome any advice you may have for me.

I have a local shop that can install the base plate and wiring kit.

It says in my owners manual that the Explorer can be towed four down.

No comments or advice? I guess I must be correct in my assumptions.

We tow ours and I don't like it. You leave it in neutral with the key in to unlock the wheel. The problem I have is with it in neutral you're not actually disconnecting the transfer case. Also you have to have the all wheel drive version. I try to avoid it. I'm looking at getting a jeep to tow

We have a 2015 Ford Explorer that is AWD and is towable. I am not sure that all Explorer's are, so you may need to double check. We do have to stop every few hours to run the engine and shift it through the gears, which is only once a day for us. (Every 6-hrs. I think. Check the manual).
I am using the Blue Ox Avail Tow Bar with their Base Plate. The Base Plate is hardly noticeable since it comes out in the lower grill on the Explorer. Make sure they only remove the "fins" they need to for Base Plate clearance as it exits the grill for appearance sake. For brakes, I went with the SMI Air Force One. It's all an easy hook up and it tows very well.

OK, so I checked the handbook again and it does say AWD is towable, but it doesn't even mention 4WD which mine is. Guess I'll have to research some more.

We were looking at towing a 2017 Explorer also.
Top of page 244 says FWD and 4 Wheel Drive CANNOT be flat towed.
AWD can so that's what I'll be looking to buy.

They swap names. Look at your rear tailgate. It'll say AWD. Ours is a 2011 and it's called AWD but in other places it's called 4wd

Went and looked at page 244 and it's about cruise control in my manual. Mine is a 2015 Explorer.
