Towing Jeep JK or JKU with Workhorse 8.1
Hi. I'm thinking of upgrading my TJ to a JK 2 door or 4 door. Anyone have experience towing with Workhorse 8.1? Thanks for all feedback.

Your signature suggests that you have a W22, which would have a GCWR of 26K. You also may have a 5K hitch. If you're pushing the GVWR, then a 4 door JK or may put you over your limits. Have you weighed your MH in its ready to travel mode? This would give you an idea of what you can tow.

Thanks Rockwood, those are my specs and I will be close. I have seen similar rigs in sigs and posts that are pulling the JKU so I know it can be done but unsure if it should be done and I'm also wondering if the extra weight compared to the TJ will be too hard to pull.

I also have a W22 and am right at 25.5K GCW. I haven't had any issues with towing, but then again, I mostly travel up and down the east coast...not too mountainous. I don't think an other 500 or so pounds on this chassis will make much of a difference.

Drag it along, you will be ok, IMHO. Can't be much if any practical weight difference between a JKU and a trail readied and armored TJ. If armoring the JKU go aluminum to save a couple hundred pounds, install a winch with synthetic rope, etc.

iawia,
There's some difference in weight but, not enough to cause issues. I've no experience with GM towing but, have had two Ford units. One, a 27' Class C Ford with the 460 and, a 34' Fleetwood Bounder with the V-10. Both towed our built TJs without issues. I'm pretty sure I was at or very close to the GVWR or, GCWR with the C but, it worked and worked just fine. At that time, I was using the Ready Brake as a toad braking system and that really helped in the braking department.

I have towed both a TJ and a JK 2dr with my Workhorse Itasca and had no problems even in the Colorado and Wyoming mountains. The 2drs are about 500 pounds lighter, so could be better to tow than the 4dr.

If this helps,
My '14 JKU weighed in at around 4400 lbs stock and 4840 lbs with the upgraded tires, etc.. as shown below

Workhorse 8.1 Towing Jeep
Hi,
I tow my 2011 JK Sport with my 04' Allegro 30DA with the 8.1 and although I haven't encountered any mountainous regions here on the East coast, half the time I forget it's there. I keep an eye on it through my back-up camera which I can keep on while driving, but at 3,850 Lbs. plus a couple hundred more in storage inside it, the Vortec engine is plenty powerful.

Thanks for all the replies. Based on your info I think I''m edging to upgrading to a 2-door JKR and leaving my wife's JKU Sahara alone. That will leave a little room for weight to pack (I like to carry a couple of inflatable kayaks).
