towing jetta tdi

I would like to know if there will be any problems with towing my 2004 tdi stick shift jetta. Also how do you unlock the steering when you are towing it without leaving the key on?

In my TDI Beetle, I can turn the key slightly towards on and unlock the steering wheel but not turn on the ignition. The odometer doesn't count the miles towed.

There is no problem towing a stick VW.
You should just be able to leave the key in the ignition in the off position, this is after you turn the ignition on and then turn it off. It is only when you pull the key out that it activates the ignition lock.
If you do pull the key out by accident, don't forget to cycle the key back on and off. This will also leave the radio on as they turn off when you pull the key out, but you can override this by just pushing the power button or volume control button.

Hope this helps

No problems toading that series Jetta (MK-IV) stick shift. Finding that "accessory position" is a bit difficult at first but you get used to it.

SHHHhhhh..... Don't tell my '00 Beetle 5 speed manual. I just pulled it 4 down from Cincinnati to Denver, Seattle, Portland, many places in between and back home again with no issues.

We were thinking of a Golf to pull but now I am confused. I wonder what the manual says. We just got our 1999 Damon Challenger and want a relatively inexpensive car to tow and for local driving. Hubby is 6'3.

As long as its a stick or manual shift, you will have no problem..

I'd love to know WHY they said this, besides a CYA legal thing. I've towed my VW 5 speed manual TDI and the transmission stayed cool. I've also read a VW tech said they'd never tested if it could be towed. (I find this hard to believe) Lots of cases of people using VW manual trans. cars as 4 down toweds. The companies that make base plates say it can be towed. The Jetta and New Beetle share the same drive train, I just can't see the issue. IF your car was still under warrantee, I'd maybe wait until it's no longer covered so you wouldn't have to battle VW over a repair issue, other than that, I say tow it and enjoy it!

I have worked on VW's for 25 years and can assure you that the transmission will not fail from towing. We still build new transmissions for new and older VW and there is nothing in them that can fail provided they have the correct oil level.

I have a 2012 GTI with a 6 sp manual with a clutch not a DSG and a VW rep told me You could flat tow the 5 speed but not the 6 sp. Seems kind of odd but I towed in in on a Demco SS460 with no problem.

Yes, a 6 speed GTI is a different transmission than the 5 speed the TDI's use. I guess I'd take there recommendation on that one and use a dolly as you did.
