I have never towed backwards, I would probably just drop the driveshaft, that's what I did when I had to tow my Dakota on a tow dolly.

You can tow it backwards on a dolly, but it can be really squirrelly. Unless you can lock the front wheels perfectly straight, you will get sideways movement. If you have a dolly with a pivoting pan, it can really become tiring. The other issue is the weight is behind the pivot point of the dolly pan. It can be done, but you just need to aware of what's going on back there. I did it for a few years with a Toyota Tacoma, and finally gave up and got a front wheel drive RAV4.

As long as you can lock the front wheels securely, no problem. Big rig tow outfits do it on tractors to avoid pulling the driveshaft.

Not recommended by any dolly manufacturer. Also the S-10's steering is designed to go forward so there can be problems even with the steering wheel tied.
