Towing my Toyota 4 runner vs purchasing a more tow friendly toad

Hi all,

I was looking at the cost to kit out my Toyota 4 runner for towing and it was about 5K between a drive shaft disconnect, brake system and lights

The 4 runner is 7 years old and was going to change it in the next 2 years or so.

What 4wd or Awd suvs would make a better tow vehicle?

The 4 runner can be towed on a dolly with the rear wheels on an dolly but that's not an option as its 4700lbs and my rig can only tow 5000lbs.

If you prefer the SUV type vehicle, I think I would look at the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Really nice vehicles and very off road worthy. Be aware, not all GC's are 4-down towable....think it depends upon the type of transfer case used.

Chevrolet Equinox V6 or GMC Terrain V6. 4 down towable as is, only have to remove the #32 fuse.

Good reasons to keep one, but if you're planning to swap it in the next couple of years anyway, does it make sense to spend $5000 on it now?

That's very true, I probably would just not bother setting up for a toad. It's one of those things that would be nice but do I really need it. Most of our trips are within 2 hours of home, I could get the wife to follow me in the 4 runner (and carry put kayaks and bikes).

I think the only time we would really want the toad is when we go on vacation for a week or so and not on weekends. We have two 1 week trips planned this year.

That's what we did until we started taking longer trips. Anywhere within a couple of hundred miles, and one of us would drive the car. My wife would fight me to drive the RV, and I'd get stuck with the car We've got a pair of walkie talkies so we could stay in touch.

Then we went to Colorado -- 1000 miles away -- and rented a car. After that, we bought a tow dolly

My wife had to get her confidence up, but now she enjoys it. I go off for weeks at a time on my motorcycle, and she's not going to sit at a home. She'll take her mom camping or goes with friends. She loads the car on the tow dolly by herself, unloads it, everything.

My wife said she will try to drive it this year, I won't hold my breath though :-)
