You could do this if your 4 Runner is rear wheel drive only. Otherwise if it is 4 wheel drive you will destroy the viscous coupling center differential. Toyota does not use a conventional transfer case with a neutral position on it's later model 4 runners after about 1999 or 2000. It would have to have a shift lever for the transfer case not a switch on the dash.

It's rear while drive when the 4wd is switched off.

Just test drove 2016 Jeep Wrangler, it was OK but a bit out of my price range. The dealer recommended a Cherokee for flat towing.

Be careful with the Cherokee (not Grand). Only the ones with Active II drive can be towed 4 down. These are usually the more expensive variants of the Cherokee. Search Cherokee on this site before investing in a Cherokee.

The Jeep sales guy explained that to me, he was very helpful.

While the rear wheels are the ones getting power the center differential is still connected to the front drive wheels and rotates in unison with the rear wheels, the viscous coupling is simply not engaged. Towing it in reverse with the rear wheels not turning will cause this viscous coupling to overheat and damage the center differential. Tow it this way at your own risk.

I am not surprised at all the dealer was wrong. I had decided that trying to reverse it on to a dolly would be a pita. I have decided it will be flat tow or not at all.

The 4 runner is 7 years old and was going to change it in the next 2 years or so.
I have had three 4Runners over the years (90', 99' & 05). Many times the Toyota service manager has said no Toyota's can ever be towed 4 down....Even with the new redesign of the Tacoma, it can't be towed...such a shame. figure all the fun you could have out west getting into a little off-roading adventures.

Hi,

This is my second 4runner, I traded in my 03 Sr5 V8 two years ago for the 2010. I had heated leather seats, remote start and backup camera added so it'd more like a limited. I test drove a 17 St5 recently and my one is just as nice, keeping it in a garage really helps.

The Jeep dealer offered me 19k on a trade for it, which is tempting.

I know my wife will go nuts if I spend 5k
setting up the 4runner for towing just to tow it a few times a year. The majority of our trips are at state parks or 2-3 nights where we kayak or hike straight from the campground. Sometimes the Kayaks need to be carried a few 100 yards which is no big deal.

So here are my 4 options.

1. Alter the 4 runner driveshaft.
2. Change the 4 runner for a 4 down tow vehicle.
3. Purchase a cheap toad.
4. Don't bother with a toad.

Just me being curious. I think the 4Runner has been available since the late 80s or so and thought there could be differences in the towability year to year -- or decade to decade.

Ah, and I see now that you said it was 7 years old. I missed that.

Hi Ed,

It sure has been around a long time.

I absolutely love mine, that's why I am not too pushed about changing.

It was a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trail hawk with Active 2 4wd they recommend, it's not body of frame like the 4 runner. I did also test drive a 2012 Tacoma automatic at the lot, the dealer said it was flat towable but when I checked it was not.

Just throwing this into the mix. I ultimately purchased a 2007 Lexus LX470 to tow behind as that is the last year they offered a manual t-Case with a true neutral position. But up to the last minute I was looking at a 2012-2016 4Runner Trail edition. That one model still has a manual T-Case with a neutral position. I could not find anyone that made a base plate for it but had decided to purchase an aftermarket off-road bumper that either had tabs or I could have towing tabs welded on. https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories...x/BX88266.html Just food for thought.
