Towing performance / recommendations

Our 2000 Jayco 3230 (32' class c) is built on the Ford E450 chassis with the 6.8 V-10. It has a GVWR of 14,050, and a GCWR of 17,550. With this large a coach on this chassis, most/all of the GVWR is taken up with the rig and our relatively minimal gear, leaving roughly 3,500# for a toad.

We will likely be setting it up for a toad this year. Currently have a 2010 Honda Fit which would work and is fairly light.

My question is: does anyone have experience towing with this chassis at closer to the GCWR? For other family reasons, I am playing with ideas about a different (heavier) toad, but don't want to end up with an impractical setup if I push the weight up toward the max.

Thanks!

Your Honda Fit, at 2500+ lbs is a good candidate for a toad. I wouldn't go bigger/heavier if you value your RV drivetrain and brakes. Having supplementary brakes on the toad would be very important, even though in many States you could get away without. With the long distance between rear wheels and hitch, any push when decelerating or turning could prove very unsafe if you don't have brakes on the toad. Safe travels.

Thanks for the observations, Bob. I should have noted that I'm planning on using a ReadyBrute tow bar with the integral surge brake. I definitely wouldn't want to make the E450 brakes do all the work.
