Towing right up to 5K limit

We have been using a dolly to drag our toad around, and have started looking at a vehicle to pull four down.

Since jeeps seem to follow almost every RV we see on the road, we started looking there first.

Seems like a JL will be in the 4500 lbs. range, JLU a bit more, and Gladiator right at 4800 lbs. All very close to the tow limits on our F53 chassis.

Just wanted to get thoughts on pushing it to the limit, i understand the GW calc's and need to have supplemental breaking. Just too many years of trying to stay away from the extreme ends of limits professionally.

Thanks,
John

It may subtract from your carrying capacity when over 4,000 lb. I would thoroughly inspect the hitch, which should have a good safety factor in its design but corrosion will impact the capacity. As long as the hitch is in good shape you should be fine since the hitch is only pulling the load, not carrying the weight that it is designed to do (typically 500 lb.)

The power train should pull it fine, you will just need to be more diligent when approaching a downhill stretch. I try to initiate my downshifting early so I don’t build to much speed.

They are limits that you should not excede.

If your not Exceding them, there shouldn't be an issue. Just don't load the toad as a supply wagon.

Just what is the percentage change in GCVW if you add or subtract a thousand pounds? Do the math and you’re not moving the needle very much on the overall combination.

As far as the hitch, flat towing 5k with braking is a lot less load than a 5k trailer.

Just stay away from big drop hitch extensions that can torque the receiver tube. There was a lengthy thread about that recently.

There's nothing wrong with working rigging to its rated capacity but I won't go a pound over. Inspect your rigging before using it.
