Towing speed??
Hello again,
Tiffin Phaeton 2016, Cummins 380hp, Allison 3000
I am all set up for towing my 2014 Honda CR-V four down. I drove about 70 miles last week making all kinds of turns, braking etc. All worked well!
My question is towing speed. The book says not to exceed 65mph. I normally run approx. 65-67 deppending on trucks etc. which can vary from 64 to 68 depending on incline/rolling hills, also what about long hill descents which sometime can run up to and over 70
I don't see it as an issue but would value your opinion?

A slight time at higher speed , should not be an issue.
HOWEVER: If you're like me and get out on the freeway and do a four to five hour drive , non-stop at speeds above those rec-commended , you may well be in for an expensive problem.

I also tow a CRV and don't go over 65 to get the best fuel economy. Another big thing for me is being able to stop with that extra weight behind me so 65 is fast enough for me. Besides that being retired what's the hurry right!!

The Honda recommendations are conservative. The problem that they want to avoid is overheating the transmission internal parts and fluid, which can create excessive wear. If you feel that you need to travel for more than an hour at sustained speeds over 65 MPH, it would be smart to do the engine start and run sequence more often. Maybe every 2 hours. Transmissions are not cheap.
In any case, change the trans fluid every 10-15K miles when you are using the CRV as a toad. No need to do a "Flush", just a drain and fill. Always use Honda Genuine fluid. It is a very easy DIY project if you want to save some money. The fluid should cost less than $10 per quart, and it takes about 3 quarts.

Funny how MFGs make recommendations or set ratings and folks do 1 of 2 things
1) Go with recommendations/ratings
2) Justify why not to follow recommendations/ratings

Trying not to be snide, but stick to the manufacturers recommendations, they may be conservative but they are there for a reason.
Why push it - 65mph will get you and your toad there safely. 65-75mph and you may end up with problems on your toad. Lots of folks push it and have no problems, but I wouldn't want to buy a used toad from them!
That being said, I have occasionally gone over 65 with my toad just as everyone occasionally speeds

Unfortunately most of the fellows I know who stretch the guidelines also cry the loudest when things go sideways. They will then tell you straight faced that they followed all of the rules and guidelines and why it was not their fault and why warranty has to fix it.

Honda must have a reason for the 65 MPH. Max. Read something about the trans. oil getting too warm and foaming. I have no reason to go over that limit! What is the hurry. At the end of the day we would probably end up at the same red lite.

I too would recommend you stick with Honda's recommendation! That's not a problem with me as I drive 60 MPH, sometimes letting it get up to 65 down the hills!

Don't forget in California the max speed towing is 55. I usually push it a bit, but not to 70.
