towing capacity vs engines and chassis
If it helps, my hitch has sticker that says it is 18,000 lb hitch rating. It is on the DP we are buying and seems to have not been added by an owner.
As to just obeying weight ratings, my original question was about using an engine and not coming even close to stressing it, harming it. We looked a long time at various class C's until we bought the Endura diesel, which performed well. But in looking at Class C's, we found a variation in engines available (differing hp, torque) with the same weights. That led me to wondering, is one of those engines more desired than another......ie. the one with higher torque, or would the other do just as well? SO, while I know weights, braking, etc are all important, it was kinda of a technical issue for me, just trying to understand all i can about diesel engines and limitations. I surly do not want to be a bother.

My chassis is rated for 15k but the receiver is only a 10k model, so 10k is my limit.

The point is that you are indeed rated by your weakest link.

According to the specs, this one has an 18k rated hitch. Depending on how much the OP has loaded in his MH, he will be able to tow between 10k and 18k - pretty much just about any toad on the planet. With an engine that size, I would have no worries towing anything!

To answer your OP. This engine has been used by Over The Road trucks operating in the 80,000 lbs range. As long as you stay with in the limits of the Chassis, pull what you want.

Now I have the numbers for this motorhome. The UVW is 28,493 which is the motorhome weight with fuel, oil and coolant. The CCC is 5,472. The GVWR is 35,320 and the GCWR is 53,320. That brings me to the 18,000 hitch. That leads me to thinking that a 5,000 toad is no problem at all. Thanks to all.
Mike

The amount you can tow is the lowest of the hitch rating or the GCVWR. On our DSDP the hitch rating is 6,000#'s, although I can put a 10,000# hitch on according to Spartan.
Also, remember that once you reach the GVWR of the RV with the toad and RV together you need supplemental braking as the RV is only certified to stop the GVWR
