towing with a small diesel

Thanks for the responses. I have another option, if you can help me. I have a lead from iRV2 classifieds on a 1996 36' Monaco 275hp/8.3L Cummins. But, Richard said it only has a 5000# hitch rating and he would not recommend towing a trailer thru the Rockies with it. Could Richard(the seller) be wrong? Thanks again, Darla

Darla--the 5,000 pound hitch rating is fairly standard on smaller diesels and gassers. I'd say he is probably correct.

But that 8.3 has a lot more torque for a given HP than the same HP 5.9, so would tow but maybe not as fast as you like up hill. Look at the GVWR and the GCWR and see if you could tow more than 5000lbs with those numbers and than you could consider upgrading the Hitch. I bought a 1996 Monaco in March, 38 footer that could handle 10,000lbs. Many of the monacos of that era could do more than 5000lbs.
