I flat tow a 2007 GMC Yukon 2 wheel drive using a Remco transmission lube pump. Have done this for 4 years. A few months ago while in west Texas my lube pump failed. I was no where near a Remco dealer and couldn't delay getting home so I disconnect the lube pump monitor (couldn't stand the constant alarm) and continued to pull the Yukon. At the end of 50 miles I stopped and checked the tranny temp (Yukon has a tranny temp gauge). Temp was 174 degrees. At the end of another 50 miles the temp was about the same. I still had over 600 miles to get home. I checked temp every 100 miles - temp was generally in same range. There is no apparent damage to the transmission as I continue to use the Yukon daily. The Yukon manual says the vehicle shouldn't be towed 4 down as there MAY resulting damage. I'm now wondering whether my purchasing 3 lube pumps over some 40000 miles of towing have been really necessary. Have any of you had similar experience? My Yukon has never towed anything but it when purchased new it came equipped with a tow package which included a transmission cooler.

Lon I don't know but I would take GMCs word for not towing, if I did tow it until I got he pump fixed I would idle the engine to power the internal pump on the transmission.

The problem is your trans has no fluid circulating when towing with engine off and trans in neutral. So the temp gage is not really telling you about the lack of lube on the wear surfaces that are not getting a regular does of new fluid.
So in emergency I would just idle the engine to let it circulate trans fluid. To avoid the lube pumps, you could install a driveshaft disconnect; which is all mechanical and no electric motor or pump parts to break and leave you stuck.
