I started to buy a new toyota tacoma 4X4 manual transmission but could not find it in the motorhome towing guide. Anybody towing one of these or know anything about this. thanks

I don't find any info either, Ron55. May I suggest contacting Remco Towing? They usually have the straight scoop, even if the manufacturer is reluctant (as Toyota most definitely is on this subject).

We have been towing our 2003 Tacoma 4x4 since new. We drove up and spent the whole summer in Alaska and are now on our way south for the winter. When we bought it Toyota did not authorize it for towing so I contacted Remco about a drive-shaft disconnect. Although they could have sold me one, their opinion was that it was towable 4-down. We leave the transfer case in 2-high (normal driving position) and the manual transmission in neutral. We've had no problems with over 15,000 miles of towing. The ignition key needs to be in ACC to unlock the steering column.

This last spring I replaced the transmission and differential oil with synthetic for reduced drag and improved lubrication during long stretches of towing. Don't forget to lube the drive shaft fittings because these are turning even when towing.

I have an 04 Tacoma 4x4 extended cab, have towed it over 10,000 miles with no problem. I place both the transfer case and transmission in neutral, key in the ignitition (ACC) and it tows just fine

I cam across your post about towing your 04 tacoma 4x4 and have a couple of questions. My truck is an 07 tacoma dbl cab 4x4 with and automatic transmision. I'm looking at installing a remco driveshaft disconnect to handle the rear wheel automatic problem, but question is about the front wheels. I have the electronic rotary knob on the dash (2H,4h,4LO). Does your truck have this same setup or have you heard of any info on my situation.

Having driven/pulled a Jeep Cherokee 4X4, with manual transfer case, I am of the ASSUMPTION that any thing that has a transfer case that can be manually or electronically put in neutral is towable 4 down. For instance, currently, two Jeep Transmissions, Chevrolet Colorado... that I know of.

Have you actually spoken to REMCO TOWING?

They should be able to answer all your questions.

Toyota didn't 'Ok' the towing of the Tacoma, manual transmission when we looked at it (not the dealer, Toyota Canada). Unfortunate because I really like the Tacoma so we went with the Nissan Frontier manual transmission. Nissan gave the 'OK' in writing so we felt better for it. Remco will provide parts for any vehicle to tow all 4 down. If the tranny goes however, it's between you and the manufacturer - guess who will win that one.
Go with what you feel you're comfortable with, if it's the Tacoma, nice truck and have fun.

I tow a 2006 LX470 and I put the transfer case in neutral and the trans in park with the key in the ignition, but in the "off" position so it doesn't run a lot of electrical drains and run up miles on the odometer. I also run the trans and TC through the gears a couple time daily to move fluids around. No problems so far, but I understand if I cook the drivetrain the rapair is on me. I figure it's worth it for the comfort of driving this vehicle.

Although this is an old thread maybe I can help someone who is considering towing a Tacoma. We have an 05 dbl. cab 4x4 Automatic and have installed the Remco disconnect. Works like a charm. The Toyota tows well but it is heavy at about 4300lbs. Have been from N.D to the Carolinas and to Mexico. Over 25,000 towing miles with no problems The Tacoma is a fantastic truck.

Front wheels are free wheeling when in 2Hi. To confirm it, jack up the front end, both sides. If you can turn each wheel without the other rotating it is freewheeling. I tow my Tundra with a Remco disconnect, transfercase in 2hi, transmission in park.
