Turn on Ignition Accessory or Not? 2013 MKT

I am shortly going to be flat towing a 2013 Lincoln MKT for the first time. The tow bar, wiring, charge line, etc. are installed and it's ready to roll.

One question that surfaced in reading all the flat towing input from the Forum was that a lot of folks towing Lincoln's have the required step listed in their manual, "Place the ignition in the accessory mode."

My 2013 MKT Owners Manual does not call for this step. Just place the vehicle in Neutral and drive away.

Anyone familiar with this "accessory ignition on or off" issue? Might the vehicles have been revised and this requirement was dropped in the newer models (unnecessary now)?

Thanks in advance for anyone's assistance and input.

Does your Lincoln have a steering interlock when the ignition is in the off position?

Maybe Solved.....

So after some lengthy testing of the various trans positions this afternoon (park, neutral), and then attempting to fully turn off the power with the car while shifted into neutral, there seems to be an in-between state where the "Accessory Mode" is off but the dash continues to display "Shift into Park".

In this interim "Shift into Park" state, the center panel is semi-lighted and no other dash panel is active (navigation panel is off and dark). In this state with the car in "neutral" shift position, the steering is free and unlocked.

After an hour or more in this state, it appears that there is no way to fully turn off the "Shift into Neutral" warning with the trans in neutral. But the steering continues to be free and unlocked while the warning is visible.

So it appears there must be a reduced power position and does not require the vehicle to be in the full "Accessory Mode", which obviously has more features active and power drain (radio, other lights, etc.).

Hence, I believe the Owner's Manual is correct and with the vehicle in neutral, the steering stays unlocked but required the warning light mode. I would assume one benefit of this interim state is it has much less drain on the batteries while towing (although I hooked up a fused charge line when plugged in to the coach).

I will keep doing some tests and keep the fingers crossed as we set out. And I'll report back on the findings.

Thanks for the response, lllkrob!

I have a Ford Edge 2014. Manual says to put in ACC mode. After a while, the dash goes to sleep. I think the ACC mode is a throwback from the key ( mine is push button to start) days to prevent steering wheel lock, but that's just a guess. I'm not brave enough to tow in the off mode for fear of something else going wrong.

I guess each year can be a little different, but with our 2011 Edge we have the keyless ignition and one push of the button puts it in acc mode. The Shift into Park warning goes away. My problem is that the dash lights never go to sleep so I have to charge the toad battery from the MH while driving or I will have a dead battery at the end of the day.
