Saw a motorhome of some sort (sorry, was merging into a construction zone on a busy interstate and was a couple of vehicles ahead so could not pay enough attention to identify it) pulling a Jeep (probably a Wrangler) pulling a two-wheel trailer with a Rhino on it. Cute!

Illegal in many states. Dynamic performance in swerving traffic would be "verrry interrresting, but stupid".

Towing two trailers is allowed in the following states:
Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana,Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, and Nebraska

This was in Louisiana, so it looks like it was legal. I doubt the total length of the toads was more than the length of some of the big tow vehicles I've seen, and the trailer looked like it was custom-built for the purpose.

That said, I wouldn't have wanted to be the driver. The construction zone has two very narrow lanes and the MH was in the left one, which has a concrete barrier right against the lane edge. It's not fun even when you're driving a regular vehicle. I'd have been white-knuckled with something as large as a MH, but I guess 18-wheelers go through there all the time.

Don't most of those states require that the first trailer be a fifth-wheel type? Which doesn't include the rig described?

I have seen a truck pulling a TT pulling a boat more than once in Mississippi and Alabama.

ignorance of the laws of some states is a good excuse,just like gun laws that apply to carry in motorhomes

In MO. you can't have two ball hitches and all trailers have to have brakes.

Towing anything when you are not familiar with your vehicle can be a white knuckle affair, however having a properly rigged second trailer should not be all that difficult as long as you know its turning radious, etc.
I drove an 18 wheeler with two trailers and a dolly between them for years. When I first started they seemed intimidating. As long as I kept that attitude, they were. However after a million miles or so they now are as familiar as a car. One of the problems with individules pulling their car and a boat behind, or some thing similar is that many of them are rigged by the owner and proper safety concerns may or may not have been completly thought out. The trailer they have attached to may not have a frame that can support another load behind. the tow vehicle may not be equipted with heavy enough suspension or brakes for the load. Their driving experience may be inadequate. On the other hand, If they answered all of the potential problems, their chances of having a good trip is about the same as yours.

The Jeep was being towed four down and the little trailer behind looked like it was purpose-built for the Rhino. It was a nice-looking little rig. Didn't look like an afterthought or something that was just thrown together.
