Which States Require "Car in Tow" Sign?

We are headed to several states we've never RV'ed into before. Does anyone know which states require a sign on the toad?

I don't know of any state that requires the signage. But I haven't been to all 50 states. None on the east coast, or south.

I never heard of such a requirement either. Never understood what good those signs do.

I find no listing of states that require the sign. I've not seen one in years. I think it's a myth made up by the folks that sell the signs. State-by-state tables or lists of towing laws make no mention of a "Car in Tow" sign, just "reflective signs" which are the reflective triangles behind a disabled vehicle.
Reminds me of the "Baby on Board" signs. When I see a car parked on a hot day with windows up I want to break a window to allow the 'baby' some fresh air.

If you tow a boat, does it need a "Boat in Tow" sign?

I don't think any sign is required, anywhere, when towing car....(I've never used or needed one).

Personally I prefer the signs that read, "I'm Pushing as Fast As I Can!"

Well, yes.

To be technical, there are Domestic and Int'l "Rules of the Road" for vessels.
Navigation Rules Online

Towing requires day and night signals. And if towing, you basically have the right of way over almost everyone on the water.

Yes, I know, 2 masthead lights one above the other. But we were discussing towing a boat ON A TRAILER behind MH or tow vehicle.

Every place I looked, no one mentions any state by name, all the SELLERS of the Car in Tow signs all just say, "Many states require them." I live in Ohio, not Many. Has anyone found a law requiring them?
Some claim it's just courteous or a safety issue, not a law.

Used to be a sign required for a car towing a car, used to see them at the drag strip, but never heard of a motorhome toad needing the signage.
Seems to me there was a post on this subject last summer too. I kind of remember ,, no one posting there had heard of the requirement either .

Bob,

I know, I know, but you didn't say towing on a trailer...just couidn't resist the boating reference being a retired Coastie

And, wouldn't it be great to have similar right of way?

There's no sign required in CA.

Yeah, but sailboats have right of way over power boats, but I found it often prudent to change my course rather than hope the stinkpot knew the regulations!!

I lived and cruised on a sailboat for about 12 years and believed in the rule of tonnage. I still do and easily give way to truckers with those big rigs that have much more tonnage than does my RV. I have seen the car in tow signs but never understood the need, I mean if there were not in tow they'd be following really to close, no?

I have had some folks try to merge in between our toad on a dolly and the RV

A sign might have done some good...but if those drivers are that distracted, maybe not.

Safe travels

I've thought about a sign like that ever since I got the new RV and had to get a drop hitch that also extends the tow setup another 12 - 18 inches. Seems like a mile distant now. had to replace safety cables and power cord.
