Wow - I forgot I posted this. I didn't get any answers until today!

Well after much research we ordered the Blue Ox Aladdin and the SMI Stay-In-Play braking system. John is going to install these himself on a Jeep Liberty that we hope to receive this week. Seems like several folks have successfully installed these systems themselves and John is pretty good at this kind of thing.

I found this old message in a search. I am considering buying the Unified Tow Brake and installing it in our Element.

Have you been pleased?

Did you install it yourself?

Where is the solenoid mounted inside the Element?

The solenoid can just lay on the floor under the driver seat or in the back seat floor space. It does not have to be screwed down in any manner. You can order an extra long cable and lay the solenoid in the rear cargo space if you want. I run a UTB as well and love it, self installed.

To answer the OP question, I use my moho to pull my toad (sorry, just had to do that!), which in turn uses a Blue Ox Aventa LX - the one with the ball joint to make it easier and non-binding to hook-up.

Just installed US Gear tow brake. I haven't tested it yet, but don't expect to have any problems. Solenoid was installed on fire wall in front of pass feet.

We tow our 2003 Honda Odyssey van. We have the "Toad Stop" vacuum brake system that uses the vehicle vacuum system to provide proportional toad braking. The system is outstanding. The system is easy to hook up to the van. The Toad Stop system can be checked easily by using the hand held stick grip, which is positioned, below the drivers seat on your tow vehicle. Just start the vehicle, drive forward to get to 15 miles an hour, and activate the hand held trigger. The vehicle will slow down to a full stop if you continue to hold in on the trigger. There is no other system that can be tested without completely hooking up the entire system. You can visit their website http://www.toadstop.com/products.htm. We have used our system for about a year and a half without any problems. This system does not affect your brake warranty on your tow vehicle.

Hi Bruce,
Blue Ox tow bar & base place. USGear braking system. Dealer installed base plate and USGear. All have worked as advertised for almost 4 years and 46K miles.

Thanks Everyone,

I've ordered the Unified Tow Brake and these REPLYs and other threads have bolstered my confidence I can do the installation myself.

Frankly, I've become wary of "professional" installations. They can be great or dreadful. For example, I had See-Levels installed some time ago and they have never worked right. I have put off dealing with it further because I'm not having a "pro" do it a 3rd time and I need the gumption and time to tackle it myself. I'll start with the iRV2 forum to get me off to the right start.
