Would love suggestions on tow bars...???
Hey All,
I finally did it...I purchased a pre-enjoyed Honda CRV and so-far, I LOVE IT!!!! I zeroed in on it because I can tow it four down behind the RV and I do not have to use a tow dolly.
The CRV is a 2008 and I would like all of your opinions about what tow bar and base plate to purchase. I also would like your opinions on various accessories...lights, brake buddies, etc. I have a tire pressure monitor system for the RV and I will get additional tire monitors for the toad.
ALso where to purchase the accesorries and have them installed?? A friend told me that he purchased his towing system on EBay and advised me that I could get a good price from other places than CW or Remco. Any ideas????

I chose Blue Ox because I wanted the hidden receivers. I bought all of my pieces and parts online and then had a local hitch shop do the installation. I used separate lights and wiring as I didn't want to tap into the factory wiring. I originally used a EvenBrake but when it quit working I had the SMI Stay-in-Play installed. SMI makes the Air Force One for rigs with air. I originally had the Aladdin tow bar and when it "wore out", replaced it with the Adventa II.

I went with the RaodMaster equipment as I like the extra strength analysis they do that seemingly no one else does. They also have the extra crossbar on the toad that adds strength to the frame attachment points.
I also use the BrakeMaster 9060 unit as it has the breakaway add on that is required in some states.

I used Blue Ox (tow bar/base plate) on ours, using a Ready Brake adapter, but if given a "do over" would go with the all in one braking system/tow bar from Ready Brake. There's no way to beat the simplicity.

We've used the Roadmster Sterling to tow our Jeep over 75,000 miles with no problems. The Sterling has been replaced with the Sterling All Terrain. The only difference is the extension bar locks are supposed to be easier to unlock in tight situations. Since we've never had a problem I don't see any need to update.
We also use the Roadmaster MX baseplates. They're flush with the bumper and have caps that fit over the ends if you want them to be less visible.

Do get the tow bar that stays on the motorhome. I recently switched from Roadmaster to to Blue Ox. Found the bar on Craigslist, bought the base plate on line and had a local shop install it and the lighting system. Check with Remcotowing.com for any system needs as they seem to keep up with what is needed. BE SURE AND follow the shifting sequence when towing. On my older CRV it was mandatory to go from drive to neutral in order to disengage the tranny. If you went from reverse to neutral all Hell let loose.

I use a Demco Excalibur rated at 10400 lbs. I feel secure knowing its holding less than half the weight of my toad, a Honda Odyssey.

That applies to all Honda CR-V and FIT models. My brand new 2012 CR-V has the exact same warning in the handbook.

I am using Roadmaster on my 1998 Honda CRV. 5000 and 5250 towbars, baseplate, Brake Buddy, 2 inch receiver hitch, and roof rack all bought from Craigs List. I installed all myself. I would also recommend ETrailer.com for towing parts and wiring. Hope this helps.

I have a Demco baseplate. It's almost nothing showing up front and comes as 1 piece. Their detailed, with photos, instructions made it simple to install, even for a car dummy like me.
My tow bar is a ReadyBrute Elite made by Readybrake.com. The supplemental braking is built-in. It was also very easy to install.
Search the internet and you can find cheaper prices than at the manuf. sites.
I can hook up and go in less than 10 minutes.

Blue Ox, can't go wrong. Easy to install, hook-up, un-hook and service. Check out this website. They are pretty good to deal with.

I have found that I can hook up our Odyssey in about the same time or less using the KK-460 dolly. In fact if I remove the attachment points from the Ody, it's quicker to use the dolly.
