To remove the filter you need to pick up a tool at any auto parts store. They are cheap and the tool is slid up into the fuel line connector which will free the connector so you can remove the fuel line from the filter.
If the vehicle has set for a day there usually isn't much if any pressure in the line. So that shouldn't be a problem.
