2016 E450 - 6 Speed Torqshift

Just wanted to post in case others had a interest. Ford is putting the 6 speed Torqshift on 2016 E450s.

Having a extra gear is going to be really nice.

I discovered this by way of researching a 2016 Jayco Greyhawk I'm about to purchase. I noticed the dash shifter looked different compared to what I am used to seeing on my current coach. After doing some digging, I found out what it was.

2016 E-Series Cutaway | View Innovative Features | Ford.com

*Featuring a muscular 305 horsepower and best-in-class 420 lb.-ft. of torque, the available 6.8L Triton® V10 is for big applications requiring lots of raw power. It’s coupled with the TorqShift® 6-speed automatic transmission, which includes a selectable tow/haul mode that compensates for altitude, grade and load conditions.*

My test drive of the Jayco was remarkable as compared to my Winnebago (granted its a decidely entry level Winnebago). I'm sure the extra gearing helped my impression of this, even though I had originally chalked it up to the way Jayco built my rig (wheelbase, balancing of the box) in addition to the many suspension/steering upgrades in their J-Ride plus package (standard on a Greyhawk).

Very interested to see how the new gearing behaves.

Now if they'd mate the 30 valve engine to it, that'd be nice.

It's going in the F53 class A chassis with the 30V as well for MY 2016, none on the lot yet:

I would be surprised if the one you test drove had the 6-speed usually motorhomes are running last years chassis. If it did have the 6-speed this may be the first one seen in the wild.

I verified w/ the dealer the chassis is a 2016. The build date on the Ford sticker on the one I'm about to purchase is 4/15.

I also verified via the VIN:

https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Vehicl...es)/Model_year

Position 10 on my VIN is 'G' --> 2016.

If you have the VIN enter it in the VIN decoder here and on the specs page it will list transmission info:

It also said I have a 2016, though the wheelbase it lists is incorrect. It also doesn't list the transmission except for the Tech Spec section which says 44P, 44T.

Regardless I knew it was different somehow when I saw the shift indicator on the dash. I just didn't put it together at the time that there could be a different transmission involved.

What did it say on the tech specs page for transmission, this is what it says for F53 with 5-speed:

Trans Order Code44T
Trans Type5 (5.0 min/5.0max)
Trans Description Cont.Automatic w/OD
First Gear Ratio (:1)3.11 (3.11 min/3.11max)
Second Gear Ratio (:1)2.22 (2.22 min/2.22max)
Third Gear Ratio (:1)1.55 (1.55 min/1.55max)
Fourth Gear Ratio (:1)1.00 (1.0 min/1.0max)
Fifth Gear Ratio (:1)0.71 (0.71 min/0.71max)
Reverse Ratio (:1)2.88 (2.88 min/2.88max)

Trans Order Code44P, 44T
Trans Type6, 5 (5.0 min/6.0max)
Trans Description Cont.Automatic w/OD
First Gear Ratio (:1)3.97, 3.11 (3.11 min/3.97max)
Second Gear Ratio (:1)2.32, 2.22 (2.22 min/2.32max)
Third Gear Ratio (:1)1.52, 1.55 (1.52 min/1.55max)
Fourth Gear Ratio (:1)1.15, 1.00 (1.0 min/1.15max)
Fifth Gear Ratio (:1)0.86, 0.71 (0.71 min/0.86max)
Sixth Gear Ratio (:1)0.67 (0.67 min/0.67max)
Reverse Ratio (:1)3.13, 2.88 (2.88 min/3.13max)

But again, it says my wheelbase is 176 and my sticker clearly says 158. So ... *shrug*

Definitely a good sign though for the 6-speed, keep us updated on how it performs and any further confirmation of it having the new transmission.

So at this point they are officially hitting the lots, hope to see some F53 class A's with it too soon.

My 'sticker' came up properly with this website:

Print the Ford Window Sticker

Shows the 158" WB, the 6 speed TorqShift, Motorhome prep, etc. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner !

I agree. The six speed will not change the way it drives much. You only have so much torque with the lower HP engine.
