6 person (+dog) toad?

Hi all,

My family is new to RV'ing, and we're trying to figure out what kind of toad will work for us. We have a 2014 Greyhawk and are expecting our 4th child. We need a toad that will haul all 6 (all 4 kids still in car seats or boosters) and also accommodate a very large dog (Bernese Mountain Dog). The Greyhawk towing capacity is 5000lbs. Is that the limit of the engine or could that be increased by upgrading the hitch?

If we could tow our current family car, that would ideal, but I think we'd be over 5000. The curb weight of our VW Routan is 4683lbs, which doesn't leave a lot of room for a dolly. As far as I have seen, I don't think the Routan can be flat towed. All things considered, we'd prefer to flat-tow, but in the end we'll have to look at all our options and figure out if buying another vehicle (that we don't really have room for!) or putting our Routan on a dolly is easier.

Any tips? We are newbies, still don't know much about anything, and I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

One solution may be a Remco Lube Pump attached to a minivan, such as a Chrysler (I checked, and this one's available on a 2013 Town & Country). This solution would allow you tow 4-down a vehicle which is not approved by the manufacturer otherwise.

Here's their website to check availability: Store : Remco

I was just googling that as well, thanks! How well do those things work, really? Our Routan is our family's daily car, is only a couple of years old...would we be risking damaging the car? I've heard the lube pumps may void some warranties, too, which would be a shame since we still have a few years of free scheduled maintenance through our's.

Isn't the Routan Chrysler-based? I ask 'cause if so it may well just need the lube pump mentioned above for four/flat towing just like the Chrysler minivans.

Just looked at the specs for your RV- funny, but they don't give a curb weight- just gross numbers. link

I was hoping to see how much "slack" there might be in your numbers- in your case the combined vehicle weight limit is 19,500 pounds, assuming 14,500 tops for the RV. The sticker on your RV's door should give a "dry" (curb) weight number...point being, if you add up your anticipated load there may be a little left over slack.

Point being that your Routan/dolly combo is so close to O.K. it may be your best bet, given the size of your family and the fact that you already have it.

Great info, thank you. Would it be smart to weigh the loaded RV and the van and see how close to the margins we are?

Yes, sassystew. Good plan. Get actual weights. It's important to know what your actual laden weights are, with cargo, people, etc.

If your weights are marginal, I would avoid a tow dolly at all costs, as it probably adds about 1K+ lbs to your tow weights. 4-down towing is the most convenient, if your toad is capable of being towed.

On the other hand, you have to be comfortable that whatever solution you come up with, from a reliability and warranty situation.

I would recommend talking to Remco regarding warranty and application concerns. We have never installed a lube pump. I just know they exist, and they may be a solution for consumers with your specific needs.
