79 24' Dodge Kit Companion Pre Purchase ?'s

Hey guys, new to the forum. I'm looking to pick up a 1979 24' kit companion with a Dodge 440 in it. Just curious if anyone here has an opinion on that particular model or the motor? Is there anything I should be on the lookout for when purchasing a used RV of this year and model? I test drove it yesterday and everything seems to be in good working order except for the brakes being a little squishy. The motorhome is in great shape aesthetically and only has 35K miles. It's priced low and I was hoping with a little money put into it I'd like to take it to Alaska. Any one have any opinions on that? Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead!

Replace anything/everything rubber.

Check everywhere for water intrusion.

When you say water intrusion, do you mean leaks inside the motorhome? The roof has been resealed and the owners claim so long as you don't let snow build up on the roof they don't have any issues with water pooling up. And as far as anything/everything rubber, do you mean on the chassis, engine, bay, brake lines, etc...?

The 440 is a good motor as is a Chrysler trans. Look for signs of any water leaks, old or new. So, you want to check the ceiling, under and around windows, doors and behind/under cabinettes. If this has an overhead bunk, you want to get up there and check everything, including under the pad/mattress.

Tires.... Check the DOT date codes. Tires approaching 7 years will need replaced. Tread has nothing to do with it.

You want to make sure the house battery(s) are getting charged with engine running. You want to also make sure when plugged into shore power, all the 120v appliances work as well as the house converter/charger, which supplies 12v to the house and keeps the battery charged.

You also want to make sure the fresh water tank does not leak, the water pump works as does the water heater. Then you have the fridge, furnace and A/C unit. Also check toilet, black and grey holding tanks for leaks.

All the chassis stuff of couse should be obvious for you. If it has a generator, make sure it runs and produces electricity.
