Awning

We have an old CLass C with a huge awning. We never put it down because it requires a ladder to put up an additional support post in the middle of it. Would like to turn it into a shorter awning. Can we use the existing support posts - just shorten the bar across the top and move one support closer to the other? Don't want to spend too much - would like to do it ourselves.

This may be a far bigger project then it may appear at first blush. Not knowing exactly what you have I do know that you are going to have to disassemble the awning frame and do some cutting as well as sealing holes in the wall of your unit. You will also need new fabric sized for your new configuration; definitely a two man job. One last thought; you'll want to make sure that the awning is firmly anchored in the rigs structure (wall frame) at its new location and not attached to just the wall. All the best and let us know how it goes.

Assuming you have a "normal" awning, you can't just move the arms closer together. The arms have to be at the ends of the roller tube, so it can roll up while retracting or deploying.
How wide is the awning and does it really need a support post in the middle, or perhaps someone thought it would be a good idea to add one ?

Awning

The awning is over 20' long. It runs the entire length of the rv, minus the cab. Is there anything inside the "roller bar" that will be compromised if we cut it to a shorter length? We thought we could move one support arm to the location where the current support is attached. That would cut the length of the awning in half. We would purchase new fabric. Does anyone know if it is difficult to attach fabric to roller bar?

Have you put out the awning and not used the middle support ? Are there any problems with it, while not using a center support ? Here is a link

to what makes up a typical awning. It would be easier, although more expensive, to replace the existing awning with the length awning that you want.

I have to agree with Mich F; you would be far ahead of the game buying a new awning and replacing the existing one. There are springs inside of the roller tube that can be dangerous if not handled properly. They will not be easily modified (if at all possible) so you'll no doubt have to purchase a new roller tube and fabric....in other words your almost there on the cost of a new awning. Here is a link to some videos on awning replacement Check out the title buttons on the right.
