Hello,

My wife and I just bought our first MH it's a 03 Winnebago Minnie 31C. We pick it up next Friday. As with any big purchase you start to second guess if it's the right choice, so I thought I would see what some of your thoughts are regarding this MH. It has 37,100 miles on it, the dealer has no maintenance records, however has all the manuals. the dealer is giving a 30 day "deluxe" warranty. The MH seems to be in good shape, I looked around with a flash light in the closet's and so forth checking for water damage, I could not find any, but I am no expert. The dealer told me everything works that the our aware of they seem like good people? Originally they were asking $54,000 then dropped it to $47,000 when I first started looking at it, we went back and forth and was able to get them down to $36,500 I took it for a test drive and when we got back that's when I said I would take it.

Everything happened so fast I really never looked under the hood or anything like that. One of my questions is 37,000 miles a lot for an 03? Will things start to need replaced soon, or should I be ok for a year or two? Besides the dealer's 30 day warranty, they are offering an extended warranty through Star, is this something to consider? It's pretty pricey, $3,262.00 for 4year/48,000 miles, it looks like it covers a lot of things, but again what do I know, this is our first MH. Is there anything else I should be worried about or check into before I pick it up next Friday and sign the papers?

We plan on using the MH for various activities, I road race motorcycles so we will be taking it to the tracks towing an enclosed trailer. We like to Muskie fish so we will also be towing our boat with it and putting it in and out of the water with the MH. Do I need to beef up the transmission or put a cooler on it?

Here are the specs I found in the cabinet:

GAWR Front:4600 Rear:9450
GVWR: 14,050
UVC: 11,905
CCC: 853
CCWR: 20,000
Factory installed options: 368 lbs

Will I be able to haul the boat, motorcycle trailer etc with this MH with confidence? It has a 3,500 lb hitch, the trailer and boat weigh under 3,000 lbs each.

I appreciate any feedback, thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome John. First of all can you take the MH out camping to make SURE every thing works? Water heater, fridge, heat, air cond. If you are in a cold climate you will have to wait until spring. Have you ever camped in a travel trailer before? This will be a big question to answer, so we can give you pointers. The mileage sounds OK to me for the year, but I'm sure there will be others answering. If you can't take it out until spring, I would aske the dealer to give you a written warranty for the first time you take it out. Check around the windows for water damage. Push the paneling in at the windows. If it gives, there is/was a leak. Check the ceiling at the vents to see if any water stains. I don't mean to scare you, but if you never owned anything, these are some things to be aware of. Of course, the MH is pretty new, so you may be lucky. Good luck and welcome. Happy travels

When we bought our MH new in 08/2005, we also purchased a Star Extended Warranty from the selling dealer - Platinum Plus, 5 year, 55,000 miles, $100 deductible --- cost was $1,495. Of course some of the risk for Star is reduced by the initial Winnebago and Daimler-Chrysler warranties.

Not sure how to compare the two MH's --- one is diesel, one is gas - one is little, one is bigger --- one was new, other is used --- etc.

I can tell you I have had pretty good success negotiating the price down for extended warranties for other vehicles, too. Looks like you have some negotiating room here. Make them an offer - try something like about half and go from there. Good luck.

Hey John, you should be fine hauling your bikes and boat with your C. You won't even know they are back there. 37K miles is a fair amount for an 03 so I don't think it was in the shop much. Get out and enjoy. What and where do you race? I announce races on the side. Scotty.

Hi John,
Congratulations on joining the RV community... it's a great place to 'live.'

I agree whole-heartedly that you need to test everything possible on your rig before the 30 days are up. Make sure all the appliances work... the fridge should work on both 110v and propane so try it on both and also to see that it'll switch from propane to AC automatically when you plug into shore power.

Check the furnace, hot water heater, stove and oven. Check to see that the holding tanks and valves all work...and that the 12v water pump and system works.

Drive the coach some more to get a feel for how it handles. Drive it at highway speed and check for vibrations.

Look carefully for leaks too. Does it have a slide out? If so be sure it works properly.

Check the awning(s).. I guess what I'm trying to say is check everything you can think of.. if you find a problem after the 30 day warrant expires that friendly dealer might just turn deaf and dumb, and the fact that it's winter may not make a bit of difference to him.

Ok, all that being said, I bet it's going to be just fine and you'll have a blast with your first RV!

Skip

Thanks for the advise Skip I will make sure I follow through on that, that would be a bummer to find out something does not work after the warrenty is over.

Thanks again
