Class C fuel economy

I have a 1995 Chevy class C mh 23' with a 454 engine. I completed my first trip in it and calculated the gas mileage at 8.8 mpg US. This seems low. What is everyone else getting? I believe the Vortec engine came out in 1996 which had better mileage.

Nope, actually that's better than a lot of them. Besides, one trip isn't enough to calculate fuel mileage from. We're close to 40,000 on our DSDP and even that's not enough for an accurate calculation.

I have a 1988 23ft Class A with a Dodge 360 with a 3 speed tranny and I get @10-11 mpg US.

My GVWR is 10,400 and my RV weighs @ 8,000

The 360 should get better mileage than the 454! The old 454's weren't known for good fuel (or oil) mileage.

How fast were you driving and were you pulling a dinghy?

Mileage sounds about right for 65 mph. I have yet to actually meet someone getting the claimed 10+ mpg that didn't drive below 55 mph.

You might have the throttle body fuel injection that came before the port injection of the Vortec, but it's still better than a carburated 454. Try these:

Don't drive your RV like a car. Think of having an egg between your foot and the gas pedal

Slow down 75 to 65 to 60, or maybe 55MPH

If you don't have them, radial tires help improve mileage

Tune your engine. Use the maximum ignition advance that it will tolerate without pinging. Also, fresh air cleaner, etc.

Make a cold air intake from dryer vent hose. Mount one end under the front bumper, and point the other end at the air cleaner

Get a Flying J RV card. .02/gallon discount off the cash gas price, and allows use of your personal credit card for whatever rewards it offers.

My 2001 with the 454 (2000 Chevy model year) does 10.4 mpg best case driving around 60 mph. Go above that and it drops. Worst tank was about 8 mpg but that was across the rockies and several passes.

The trip was about 1000 miles and I averaged 60 mph and almost never went over 65 mph. I changed the oil and installed a new air filter. I wasn't towing anything and no big mountain climbs. Thanks for the tips.

huh?? Why cant you tabulate MPG from 1 or 2 tank fulls? Its called an average for a reason. Saying you need XX,XXX miles for a mpg calculation is absurd. Well unless you have thousands of dollars of expensive telemetry isolating every facet of MPG.

MPG

MY 2011 Chateau 31 / Ford E450 usually gets about 8.3 with the generator running and about 9mpg with the generator off, I usually set my cruise on 63 mph.

I said ACCURATE fuel mileage figures, not just estimates that are sure to be wrong!

Cummins says 140,000 miles.

No way, how many sets of tires will you have gone through driving 140,000 miles? Way too many variables come into play over that much distance.
Unless every trip is exactly the same under the exact conditions all you will ever get is an estimate.

Hi Mr_D, where did you see Cummins recommendation of driving for 140K to figure out fuel economy?

I hope I don't sound like a smart Alec but I just happend to work on the daily basis on Cummins M-11, ISC, ISL, and Caterpillar C-9 engines, and I never read or heard of such a thing!
By using factory electronic diagnostic equipment you CAN monitor(among many other values -fuel pressure, coolant temp, ambien temp, intake air temp. turbo boost etc.)fuel economy at any given moment and/or on each trip!

My 2001 Itasca Spirit 29N, on E-450 FORD V10 fully loaded and towing KK Demco SS with 3400 pounds car, staying @ 60 - 63 MPH gives me 7,8 - 8,7 MPG. This includes driving over long and steep passes, and occasionally using generator, and A/C.
