Damaged wood work.

I am thinking about rebuilding some of the wooded areas in our mh. Namely the dinette seats, table, the kitchen counter-top and small wall divider/cabinet support at the edge of the counter-top between it and the dinette seat. The kitchen counter has a laminate on it. Now my question is. What light weight wood would you recommend for the wood work. Looking for something light weight, preferably heat resistant and sturdy. Yea, I know, wood and heat. But I know some are treated for it. I haven't done wood working for a while. But I would like to try and do this task to help re-beautify our mh, give it a more custom feel, and repair any damage that may be there from previous owners/users. Any thoughts or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a good project. You might conside poplar or aspen for the woodwork. Stay away from plywoods as the final layer is very thin and hard to repair. Poplar takes finishes well and is light but strong. Any wood counter should not be subjected to very much heat from pans and dishes as some discoloring will eventualy occcur. I would avoid poly stains as they are hard to repair any marks or scratches without full scraping of the finish. Rubbed oil finishes can be touched up with very little effort to original condition. Thanks for the reply. That got me thinking. The reason for the heat resistance is because we use a toaster oven. And It would be nice to be able to set hot items off the stove. So anyways, that got me thinking. Possibly in the one spot the toaster oven sets. I might see about putting a granite or other type of inlay that could be light weight but still help with the heat on the counter-top where it would sit. That might take care of the heat resistance problem. And add a nice touch to the surface. What do you think?

That sounds like a neat idea, and wouldn't be hard to make. They also have some nice terracotta sheets like used for cooking pizza in the oven. good luck.

I will have to check into the terracotta sheets. That's a good idea.
