Hello Master Chief.
We, too, experienced the same thing on our E350 and E450 chassis Phoenix Cruisers.
It's a Ford thing because there's no heat shield over the exhaust pipe under the Passenger's side floor.
Our temporary fix was to place a folded towel on the floor.
The permanent fix was to clamp a home-made sheet metal heat shield over the exhaust pipe.
Unfortunately, there's no real easy fix for the engine cover unless you insulate the inside of it with flexible mat heat shielding.
