First time with a Diesel
We will soon own our first diesel, a new Renegade Vienna. From our research, it doesn't seem like to big of a difference in terms of maintenance etc. Appreciate any feedback/advice from any of you that have already made this transition. We are transitioning from a 36' class A Tiffin with the Ford V-10 to the Mercedes 3500 Sprinter Chassis 3.0 liter turbo. I know the fuel efficiency will be much better. Wondering how the power will be with a mini cooper toad? Thanks for any input. Duane

Your diesel will have a very different range of power than the Triton V10. Diesels make torque at a much lower RPM than the V10. Read up on the torque/RPM range of the MB. Pay attention to the different oil and other fluid requirements of your new RV. In cold weather, you'll have to remember cold weather starting differences in a diesel from a gas vehicle.

Just keep your Sprinter full of oil, def, and diesel and have you maintenance done on schedule and it should run forever.
MB has a spec for every fluid that goes into the vehicle so, before you add oil, check to make sure the oil is Mercedes spec'd. Mobil 1, pure synthetic, 0-30 and the label should say meets MB spec, for example.
Your little 3L diesel will surprise you as it provides more than enough acceleration for the Sprinter chassis. Enjoy your new toy.

The power should be more than enough with your Mini toad. One thing with the turbo diesel that I notice is that, on acceleration from a stop, the rig accelerates slowly for about 1-2 seconds then the turbo kicks in and acceleration is more than adequate.

Depending on the year, up to 2016 oil will be either spec 229.51 or 229.52, 2017 chassis year and later must be 229.52. The word APPROVED must appear with the spec number, or its not a legit approval. Wrong oil will mess up the exhaust filter, egr, etc.
Based on the info in your owners manual, click on the appropriate spec numbers in this link and you will get a list of all currently approved fluids for that spec.

Buy a transmission dipstick so you will have it when you need it.
Dipstick dont buy a cheap one from ebay or amazon, they will come apart on you.
Both the old 5 cylinder and the newer V6 like to spin real fast. Best power is made in the mid 2000's and its not uncommon to see well over 3000 rpm on the engine. Do not hesitate to manually downshift the transmission in anticipation of a uphill grade, or coming down a long downgrade.

Great info, thank you. Does the diesel use more oil than a gas engine?

I noticed that as well on our test drive. Also the transmission shifts very different than the Fords I drive. It was very smooth, almost to the point that you could not tell what gear it was in. Thanks for the feedback!

It doesn't use more oil, but an oil change, according to year and engine, takes between 7 - 9 quarts with filter change. Most autos use about 5 quarts.

We love the drive of our 2017 Isata3 MB diesel and pull a small toad as well. Enough power even for the western mountains (we are currently in AZ and heading to Colorado). Remember to keep an eye on the DEF as if it gets too low you will get a warning and then can only start the engine 10 more times of so before it basically quits and holds your speed to 5MPH until the DEF is replenished. We found we can get about 6500 miles before needing more. So we try to top it off and always keep a 2.5 gallon (get it as Wal-mart) jug stored as a backup.
Oil change is more expensive ($150 or so) but needs to be done every 20.000 miles. So in the long run may not be much more expensive).
Good luck and enjoy the new rig.
