Generator pigtail

In order to power my coach a Minnie Winnie I have to unplug from pedestal and plug into the gen set receptical which you have to stand on your head and hold your tounge out. They so nicely put in the back of the small storage compartment.I want to add a short pigtail so I can plug the shore cord in much easier.Would I be adding any kind of "resistance" by adding the 2 plugs in addition to shore plug,if so would it be enough to matter. All answers appreciated....Thank you

You should be fine making up a short extension. Folks use long extensions all of the time.

You are actually only adding 1 connection. A male and female pair. The other would be there anyway.

My View has a similar compartment. I was able to make the system much more workable by doing several things. I moved the access door strut mounting bracket up some to make the door open further up, without compromising the hinges, and this allows easier access. I made a nice new piece of plywood, sanded and varnished, to replace the original that the electrical boxes were mounted on. To this I installed a Progressive Industries EMS HW30C up toward the top with the shore cord connected directly into it, and the cable going to the power panel inside coming out of it. Below this I reinstalled the 4x4 box with the generator receptacle, (and this is important) with the ground pin outboard, the two flat blades thus are horizontal.( Winnebago installs the receptacles with the ground pin on top and the blades are vertical, a much more cumbersome and difficult position to force the cord into to plug it in.

Then when I unplug from the pedestal, I use something, and old sock or a paper towel, and feed the cord into the compartment and wiping it off as I go, winding it CCW (looking down) and it ends up with the plug right at the genny outlet, and I slap it in the receptacle and ready for the road. One thing I also did was to replace the plug on the cord with a GOOD one, not some cheap junk (Camco comes to mind here). I used a Progressive Industries TT-30P plug. It is large and allows for a good grip, but most of all, due to the nickel plating on the blades and the shape of the ground pin, the effort required to plug or unplug this from a receptacle or dogbone, is way less than any other plug I have encountered, and I tried several before I found this one.

Yes, you are still bent over, or on one knee, but its all much easier.

If you don't do anything at all but remove the two screws at the corners of the genny outlet box cover, and carefully rotate it so the ground is outboard and the blades are horizontal, and reinstall the cover with receptacle, you will make it much easier to plug and unplug.

Charles

You could just remove the generator receptacle and splice in a short extension cord using the proper wire nuts. The existing box can be covered with a blank plate.

If your going to rewire, or relocate the receptacle, you may as well spend $65. for an automatic transfer switch and a couple of cable clamps.

It will cost more than $65, but I agree!

I also made a pig tail cord on my 2014 31K. Pulling 25' or so of shore power cord out the bottom of the MH, through a pyhi got old real quick. I also added an automatic transfer switch and a Progressive Industries EMS in the same compartment. 3 very good additions/ideas.

You don't have to be an electrician to add either of those items. The directions will be easy to follow.
