New carb and fuel filter question on 86 Tioga Arrow

Hi, took my 86 class c tioga arrow in to a mechanic. He suggested a repair on the carburetor and a new fuel filter.

The fuel filter was replaced less than 6 months ago by PO when she had a tune up done. The mechanic said he would hate to fix the carburetor, get all the gunk out and use the same fuel filter because of the bad fuel in it. Does this make sense? The guy who did the tune up recommended a new carburetor originally but PO didn't want to put the money in it. This mechanic wants to just repair it, add a couple new parts and charge about $350.

Just looking for feedback to see if anyone has any thoughts. I'm new to owning an RV and am hoping my new purchase hasn't turned into a money pit befor it even gets out of the driveway.

Assuming this rig sat for 6 months, then the fuel would be bad and the carborator likely gummed up a bit.

Since the carb was acting up 6 months ago, then it probably has other issues.... and it's almost 30 years old. Unless this PO let it sit a lot with old gas in it. If this were the case, I would double or triple treat the gas with Seafoam or some other good fuel system cleaner and see what happens after an hour or so of driving.

As far as the fuel filter, yes it could have some bad gas in it, but so would the tank and fuel lines. Since it's only 6 months old, I seriously doubt it would be plugged up. However, fuel filters are cheap and isn't a bad idea.

Kim. Do you know for SURE that the filter was replaced??? New filter is cheap and then you know for sure. What is the "repair" that needs done on the carburetor? If it just gummed up a bit then I agree with John. Give it a good dose of Seafoam or Techron and take it for a long drive.
If you do end up needing a carb, have the old one rebuilt by a firm that specializes in carbs.
Best of luck!
