Onan generator priming

How long do you have to prime the generator before trying to start it, does the prime light go off when it is primed or do you just stop priming , and do you start the generator while priming. Thanks is advance.

On my Onan 5500 gas I just hold the the toggle on/off-prime switch to "off-prime" until the red light comes on. Takes maybe 3 seconds. Then push the on side until it starts, never more than 5 seconds. If not, repeat x1. Never had it not start.

It is the same toggle so no I cannot prime and start at the same time, its one or the other.

Don't know if the prime light would stay on because as soon as I see it, I start the generator.

My Onan 4000 I have 1 button and hold the prime about 5 seconds and then try to start it. If it doesn't turn over I repeat again and it always starts.

I can not tell you how long but I can tell you how to find out.

Option one, with it dim inside the motor home press the STOP button till the light lights... Add 10 seconds

Or outside, you can press and hold till the fuel pump starts to click click click, and again add 10 seconds.

On my 5500, the Onan fuel pump stops ticking when the carburator float-bowl is full. On an EFI engine, I don't know.
