Recommendations for RV to haul horse trailer

I'm hoping to get some recommendations on what Make/Model/Qualifications I should be looking for in an RV that will be able to haul 2 horses and a horse trailer. It's likely to be about 6000 pounds. Eventually I'm hoping to purchase a used RV but need some help narrowing down the many many choices.

If the budget allows, I would recommend a Diesel for the power. 6K lbs is significant.


You really need to get out and look so you can decide on the type of floorplan you like.
We started looking at 36ft RV, but ended up with a 40ft to get the kitchen counter space that we wanted.
Also important...do you have kids, and what sleeping capacity do you need.

I would think a diesel pusher would be the only option. Most gas coaches can only tow 5-6k lbs while the DP's can tow 10,000-15,000 typically

In regards to suggesting a make/model/etc...it totally depends on your budged.

Numerous great brands out there but to me probably the most important factor is how it was maintained

We have two kids. I'm less concerned about the floor plan, though we are hoping to find one with a shower. I appreciate the recommendations about a diesel pusher. Our budget is not impressive; unfortunately this is really a purchase out of necessity rather than desire.

I have experience only with LQ goosenecks but a number of people I camped with for years pulled two horse trailers with class c motorhomes on a regular basis. I think you will find some of the Ford based class c motorhomes have greater towing capacities than 5000#'s. Currently we are setting up a smaller class a with 5000# capacity to pull a two horse. We sold our goosenecks and bumper pulls and bought a small two horse slant that weighs 4600#'s with our two medium sized quarter horses and minimum tack. Haven't towed it yet but it should be fine. I seem to check pplmotorhomes.com daily, they are located in Texas and from what I have seen great prices and also it looks like honest opinions on the conditions of their RV's

Even if your budget is $20k or even $10k or less, post up your budget and people will give suggestions. Also look at the website I listed above, there are a few other websites similar to ppl, I can't recall their name

Our 2000 Dutch Star DP had a 5,000# tow rating, the '02 Dutch Star DP had a 6,000# tow rating but Spartan said I could put a 10,000# hitch on it, the present rig has a 15,000# tow rating.
Most Type C MH's are limited to 3,500#'s

Can you provide a short list of Class Cs with that tow rating? There are frequent requests from folks on these fora who want to tow more than 3,500 or 5,000 pounds, and some of us would like to know what coaches to recommend to them. Thanks!

The E450 has had a 7,500# difference between GVWR and GCWR for a number of years (since 2008 I believe). SOME class C manufacturers have rated their finished product to tow that amount, while some even put on an 8,000# rated hitch, while others might limit the tow rating to 5,000#.
I believe if the frame has been stretched to Ford specs (I can't believe any MH builder wouldn't stretch a unit to Ford specs), and the extended frame after the rear axle has been extended to specs, it should retain the 7,500# tow limit.
The bigger issue is probably tongue weight. My 2014 E450 is limited to a 350# tongue weight (it has a 5,000# hitch). I don't know what the MHs with the 7,500# tow rating from their respective builders have for tongue weights, but wouldn't be surprised if they had a 500# rating. That's a lot of weight 12' or so behind the rear axle, on a longer 220" +/- wheel base vehicle.
Perhaps someone who has (or at least seen) one of these 7,500# tow rated MHs can post the tongue weight limit ?

We had a coachman Freelander. It was 35' long with the ford chassis and the v10. We pulled a steel stock trailer with two full size horses and 2 weeks worth of hay from Iowa to Custer South Dakota twice. It weighed 24k lb. fully loaded. It pulled just fine. We averaged 63mph on the interstate.

FWIW Also look at the C's on an MDT Chassis. Search for Super C. I just checked a Thor with 15,000 lbs cargo/tow capacity

My 2016 Jayco Redhawk 29XK Hitch states Tow rating 7,500 lbs with 750 lbs (10%) tongue weight.
