There are many threads about updating TVs from the tube type to flat screen. Search using the Google search box at the top of the page. Remove the old TV and see what's behind it. In my case, I cut a piece of 5/8" plywood to behind the frame of the opening. Cutting a few holes in the wood to access cables and cords, I through bolted a flat screen wall mount to the plywood, and hung the TV. Did it in front and in the bedroom, not a difficult job. You'll have to size the new TV to fit between any doors on either side of the TV opening or choose a mount that allows the TV to swing out of the way when you want access to the compartment doors.
