Road Trip
Good Afternoon... I am a "newbie", to the forum. We purchased a 2006 Four Winds 31, a few months ago. It only had 12,000 miles on it, so we are looking forward to changing that. We have taken it locally, but now we are planning a road trip from Florida where we live, to New York. We have a couple of weeks for our trip, but I still have a few questions. Is it better to "wing it", or make campground reservations prior to leaving? I would like not to have a specific schedule, but maybe it is the safest way to head north. I have heard that rest stops are not safe, and overnighters are not allowed. I am just afraid that we will be driving around forever trying to find available campgrounds. What is your suggestions? Thanks...

If you do not make reservations, definitely plan out a few spots that you would like to stay. Instead of driving around you will have a list of spots to call.
When planning a trip, I also try to plan my fuel stops. Gas stations are plentiful but some are easier to get in and out of than others.
At night, if you can find a Cracker Barrel Restaurant or Walmart in a well lit area, you will be fine. I would never stay overnight at a rest stop many places of business welcome RVers.
Good luck & enjoy your trip.

The only time we worry about reservations is during the summer peak travel season and/or if we are going to a popular destination. Just got back from 3 weeks from denver to nebraska, iowa, south dakota and ended up in yellowstone national park. The only reservations we had was at the yellowstone madison campground. Unfortunately we arrived a day early. They did not have a site available so had to go to west yellowstone and a private park.
We do have a Good Sam camp ground guide book and have a general idea where we want to finish the day's travels and use the guide to check available camp grounds for ratings. If we think we might arrive late in the day we will call one to confirm availability. Usually this time of year the camp ground host will tell you they have lots of room and dont even need a reservation.
We also do not like to stay in walmart's, cracker barrels, etc.
On our first trip years ago in our new "to us" rv, i had made reservations for every night we were out. They ended up being a noose around our neck and took away the freedom of "following your nose" on some days locking us into a specific location. That was the last time we did that.
Good luck. I think you are in for a lot of fun, choosing the RV lifestyle.

Good Sam has a trip planner program as well as an advisor available. Have found them very helpful when originally was "new era" time has taught me what works for me n my schedule.
Give them a call. Might be what you need n can ask questions.

Get the "Next Exit" information on RV friendly gas stations/diesel stops/ campgrounds etc.
Great resource.

The RV Trip Wizard offers everything you need to plan your trips. I have used it for several years planning all my trips.
When just overnighting, I try to stay at Flying J's, Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops, Cracker Barrels and Casinos. In addition to the Trip Wizard, I also use Overnight RV Parking showing free or minimal fee and Passport America for finding half price campgrounds.
On my phone, I use All Stays Camp and RV app.

I'd wing it, that's the freedom of owning an RV. You will never have to worry about having a place to sleep. When the DW and me travel we stop at a campground and stay awhile if we like it, if not we move on the next day. We usually have an idea where we want to go when we leave and pick a campground at that location. No reservation and we have never been turned away.

There is a book called the Pocket truck stop guide and it will give you tons of info as to where you can rest for the evening or a few hours. It's only six dollars.
