Southern Indiana seeking advice
My wife and I will be retiring March of 2020. We are looking at Class C Motorhomes. We want to visit local parks on weekends with our granddaughter and grandson.Plus stay in Florida for January and February. We are looking for something that sleeps at least 6. Yet with this being our first Motorhome I would feel more comfortable with something 24 ft or less. We have looked at rvt.com and rvtrader.com Our questions are, is it better to buy from dealer or private owner? Should we consider something a few hundred miles away or buy locally? We have read where dealers won't service RV unless bought from them. Do we buy something from 2012 up or does age really matter? Low mileage vs high mileage. If you can tell us the good and negative of Class C motorhomes. Also seat belt laws? Thanks for any advice you can give. If we find something we really like we would buy before retirement.

Glad to have you here in the forum with us.
I'd rather have high mileage that has been taken care of than low mileage that has been neglected. Either way have it inspected by a certified RV tech before buying.
Happy Trails!!!

Welcome!
A 24' might be a little small for 6 in my opinion. If buying used, make sure someone knowledgable checks it. Buyers in the enthusiasm tend to miss things. MHO. Wish you well.

Southern Indiana seeking advice
You live in the RV manufacturing Mecca (state of Indiana). Many are built there and have dealers within a few miles of the factory as well as manufacturers that sell direct to consumer. I suggest renting a few different styles / sizes over a weekend or so to get a sense for what you will prefer. We can sleep 6 in our Winnebago View (24.5 feet long), but 4 or fewer is more enjoyable in that length. We traveled a few thousand miles with 3 teens and 3 adults for 10 days and it was doable. Normally our travel is with 2 teens and 2 adults, such as last summer across British Columbia.

Winnebago factory service in Forest City wouldn't be too bad for occassional service. For retirement, if you buy new and buy right, you'll be set for 15-20 years. We bought new last Fall...no regrets. Winnebago has a great lineup and priced in the middle.

Long Distance buying trip
Welcome!
To start off this is my opinion and I offer it for your use.
I also live in Indiana, just North of Kokomo about 2 hour drive to most of the manufacturing plants.
I found that most of us in this state think the pre-owned units are gold plated.
We used many different websites to search for what we were after and I emailed dealers and private sellers alike. We went to some sales lots too.
I was so fortunate to find and wonderful couple who had a high mileage unit that was a rental in a past life. This unit had 150,000 on it and it was very well cared for.
So once we wanted to move on it I flew to North West TX to see it. since I was very sure I wanted it I only had a one way ticket.
It was as it was advertised and after a few hours of paperwork and education on the unit I dove it off. It was a great shakedown trip of 1200 mile to get home.
If you do your legwork you can buy anywhere, no one wants to work on a unit that they did not sell, but it should not be a dealer breaker for you.
The chassis is good for much more than the 165,000 miles it has now, maintenance is the key.
Good Luck and have fun!

You may find a 24 footer small for 6 people. I would suggest a 30 footer. You lose 5 to 6 feet up front in class c rv's (engine, seats, etc.). Swivel seats will help recover about 2-3 feet. Remember they are measured bumper to bumper for length. I find my 30 footer is good for the 2 of us. Slide outs help as well.

Thank you. We are taking this all in. Our retirement date is April 2020.
We hope to gather enough info to be able to know what we need by Jan 2020.

You will find a 24 too small and with 6 people you will have a problem with weight
carrying limits. We are 2 adults only and find it a bit cramped but doable.

My wife and I just purchsed A new Diesel Class C motor home. Forest River, Forester model. Be sure to purchase A Mercedes-Benz BlueTec. Talked to many C class owners and all told me they should have purchase A Diesel to start off with. A little more money for the Diesel but not sorry for spending the extra. I looked for used Class C Diesel's but could not find A one.

Agree...for a motorhome that would be quite short. I have a 25 foot LTV, class B+. It would probably be too tight for your purposes. Fits two people good. A Class C with over cab bunks will be better for you but I suspect it will need to be about 30 feet.
