Just back from a trip to RV country in northern Indiana. Highlights of the trip were tours of the Dynamax factory in Elkhart and Showhauler in Middlebury. They make a remarkable product. You almost have to see it to believe it. I see that a few people here have these coaches. We would like to hear from you what you like or don't about your RV. The idea of having the protection of the heavy chassis, not to mention huge carrying capacity, seems appealing, but we don't really know the downsides. One story we heard was about a Showhauler owner whose stopped coach was struck on a freeway by a loaded 18-wheeler at full highway speed. As badly as the back end of the coach was smashed, all the occupants walked away.
For those who may not know, Dynamax, Showhauler and a few others build motorhomes on full-size heavy truck chassis such as Freightliner Columbia and Volvo. (GCWR 80,000 lb.) I saw large numbers of these on the road coming back to Texas. Freightliner and Volvo combined seem to own a HUGE chunk of the over-the-road truck market. These are technically Class C, but there's a world of difference from the usual class C on a van chassis.
Dynamax builds a very elegant aluminum frame and fiberglass coach with lots of luxury touches. The top-of-line Grand Sport Ultra is really stunning.
Showhauler builds a completely custom coach on a chassis that you choose. Even a used one. They work with either Freightliner or Volvo chassis. The structure is welded steel and exterior is aluminum. Everything is very high quality, and they will customize nearly anything about the coach.
