Toilet stuck
Our toilet gets stuck when we flush it. The water gets stuck on and we have to slam the foot pedal multiple times to get it to quit. How can we fix it?

You do not mention the brand of toilet.
If a Thetford there is a ball valve and seal kit and a water valve kit.
Google the make and model number.

From your description is sounds like it is only the water valve that is sticking. right?
Could be a shot of water resistant silicone spray right where the plunger goes into the valve body may do the trick.

If not, then as Harris155 indicated, either sa new valve or rebuild the existing one could be in the cards.

When you flush toilet how do you release foot pedal??
Slowly let it close controlling it with your foot
OR
slip your foot off and let the spring return close the ball
Hint;;;;slip foot off and let it slam shut
If the ball doesn't fully close then clean seal top/bottom using your hand and flexing seal while cleaning it....clean ball then use some plumbers grease to coat seal/ball
(or use some olive oil......what I have used for years)

Mine did that and I found pushing the end of the pedal to the right stopped it.
Did it off and on for a week or so, but it's been months since it did that now.
Actually, it started after my foot slipped off the pedal once. so I thought I knocked some debris loose.

What is the reasoning for "slip foot off and let it slam shut"?? I have seen this mentioned many times, but I haven't been convinced it is of any benefit so far.

Because foot pedal has a 'return spring' that closes the ball ----overcomes resistance from bowl seal
Water valve has a 'return spring' that close the supply....overcomes the inlet pressure
Letting foot slip off pedal allows the return springs to close ball & water supply

I hear ya OLD, but I When you slam them shut, everyone for miles around know you just went to the potty
I keep my ball/socket lubricated with Plumbers Grease and the only problem I have is when Sharon doesn't put enough water in the bowl before beginning. I've given up telling her "lift the peddle up for extra water dear". Because she always says "Why"? Then she usually follows that up with "why doesn't the toilet paper do down properly?". If I try and direct her to place all toilet paper in a plastic Walmart bag like some do, I'm afraid I would be out looking for a new wife! And after 45 years, I think I will keep things as they are. Now if I was to add "let the peddle slam shut", I'm afraid that complication in using the potty may be too much for her!
BTW cleaning the rubber gasket using your finger is YUCKY! I just use my wife's toothbrush.

Our valve stuck on very slightly one night and overflowed the toilet. Ruined the wood floor.
While you could install a new valve, new toilets are cheap. $125-150. Camping World puts them on sale often for $99.95.
Why not get a new (better) one?

Ditto the new toilet... it took me all of a leisure 15-20 minutes and $100 in parts.
